The Lost Religion of Jesus, A Collection of Resources

The Lost Religion of Jesus, A Collection of Resources

Christians have inherited a rather anachronistic interpretation of Christianity based on viewing the tradition solely through the "lens" of Paul. It is said or believed by some that Paul became a convert maybe between 34 and 36 A.D., roughly 4 to 7 years after the crucifixion of Jesus. The full canonical corpus of Paul's letters seems to burst upon the scene sometime well into the Second Century A.D., but certain letters are assigned by some dates of composition in the mid 50's and 60's of the First Century. It should be obvious that the Jesus movement doesn't begin with Paul. Paul arrives after the time of Jesus and the establishment of his spiritual successors, the first apostles, and that Jesus along with his disciples never had a "Pauline theology". This begs the question, what is salvation, the spiritual practice, and ethical code to be followed according to Jesus and his actual disciples? This original Jesus movement, sometimes called the Hebrew Christians, Ebionites, Nazoraeans, and by other terms, is the 'Christianity Before Paul'. Have always been quite curious about this Jesus Movement so marginalized in the canonical New Testament and seemingly edited out of the timeline.

The Hidden Sayings of John the Baptist -- Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

The Hidden Sayings of John the Baptist: A Voice Crying Out in the Wilderness -- Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

The Lord's Prayer of the New Testament is modeled after the Prayer of John the Baptist. “Master, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” (Gospel of Luke) In light of this, today we begin by examining the Lord's Prayer from various translations including some that are rather mindful of the Aramaic roots of the Jesus Movement. We also consult with the Gospel of the Nazoreans. Shared as well during this program is: 1) a Prayer of John found in a Syriac Aramaic manuscript; 2) a vegetarian saying attributed to the Prophet John present in the Slavonic Book of Josephus; 3) another vegetarian saying of John located in the Scroll of John the Baptizer (Drasa d-Yahya); 4) along with several passages from the famous Mandaean Gnostic scholar Ethel Stefana Drower commenting on the vegetarianism of the original John the Baptist sect of the Trans-Jordan known as the Nasoraeans (Nazoreans). And then the main feature of today's Spiritual Awakening Radio podcast 5): readings from the Hidden Words of John, a collection of wisdom sayings found in the Great Treasure, some ancient manuscripts written in the Mandaic dialect of the Aramaic language. This 'proverbs' or 'sayings' type format of "The Instructions of John the Baptist" reminds me very much of another book from antiquity, and it also happens to be attributed to John's most famous disciple Yeshua: The Gospel of Thomas, "hidden words that the living Jesus spoke." Readers of the New Testament and extra-canonical scriptures of the various early Jewish, Christian and Gnostic sects typically aren't used to seeing many actual direct quotes from John, and yet there are many sayings to be found if one knows where to look. Today's podcast is dedicated to the teachings of the Prophet John (Yuhana) the Baptist, a mysterious "voice crying out in the wilderness."

Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast: Mandaean Nasoraean Gnostic Spirituality -- The Mandaean Scriptures Are Out Of This World!

Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast: Mandaean Nasoraean Gnostic Spirituality -- The Mandaean Scriptures Are Out Of This World!

A rare glimpse into the origins of Christianity and Gnosticism. Today we explore the history, the scriptures, the mystic teachings and poetry of the root group, the common ancestor, the earlier original spiritual movement in antiquity out of which emerged the Jesus Movement (Ebionites), the Elkasites, and the Mandaean Gnostics. I speak of the Nasoraeans, the followers of John the Baptist. The Nag Hammadi texts may represent the prose of the Gnostics, but it is the Nasoraean Mandaean scriptures that give us the poetry!

The role of the Heavenly Messenger is to give the mystic experience of light to souls and eventually guide them back up to the Place of Light, the Mandaean term for the highest heaven where the Great Life (God) resides. Here are some passages of mystic poetry from Mandaean holy books on Manda-d-Hiya -- the great heavenly redeemer and the spirituality of the Mandaean Gnostics:

The Illuminator of the Worlds of Light

In The Name Of The Great Life,

Sublime Light Be Praised.

From the Place of Light I came forth,

from you, Bright Habitation.

I come to touch hearts,

to measure and try all minds,

to see in whose heart I dwell.

Whoever thinks of me, of him I think;

whoever calls my Name, his name I will call.

Whosoever prays my prayer from the earth,

his prayer I will offer from the Place of Light.

I came and found the truthful

and believing hearts.

When I was not dwelling among them,

yet my Name was on their lips.

I took them and guided them up

to the World of Light.

I became the Illuminator

of the Worlds of Light.

I became a king to the Nazoreans,

who receive praise and stability

through my Name.

And by my Name they ascend

to the Place of the Light.

As for the elect righteous

who put me on as a garment,

their eyes were filled with Light,

and Manda-d-Hiya [Knowledge of Life]

was established in their hearts.

The worlds know not Thy name, nor recognize Thy light.

O fie on those who sit and eat and drink.

On those who quarrel and persecute!

Day by day they sit on thrones of insolence

And persecute the name of the Life;

{Yet) they knew not the name of the Life,

Nor did the idea of the Life enter their minds.

{But) we have testified to Life and put our trust in Life;

And Manda-d-Hiia [Knowledge of the Life, Gnosis of the Life] stood by us,

was of our company

And was our Helper.

Go to the house of him who knows Me,

Those who know me, for I dwell amongst them

In the hearts of my friends

And the thoughts of my disciples.

And Life is victorious.

I wait upon the Life and mine eyes upon Manda-d-Hiia; for

they will be my support, my deliverer and saviour

from the Place of Darkness

to the Place of Light.

In the name of the Life!

Blessed and praised be the Life!

Blessed and praised be the name of Life in the Place of Light!

Blessed and praised are you, my lord, Manda-d-Hiia;

You and your strength, your radiance, your height, your glory and your

help.

My chosen! Do not put your trust

in the kings, rulers, and rebels of this world,

nor in military forces, arms, conflict,

and the hosts which they assemble,

nor in silver and gold…

their gold and their silver

will not save them.

Their authority passes away

and comes to an end.

Thou hast showed us that which the eye has not seen,

and caused us to hear that which the human ear has not heard.

Thou has freed us from death and united us with Life,

released us from darkness,

and united us with Light...

Thou hast shown us that which the eye has not seen,

and caused us to hear that which the human ear has not heard.

(Canonical Prayer Book of the Mandaeans)

I do agree with the scholar Robert Eisenman that finding the historic James the Just (brother and spiritual successor of Jesus) is the most logical way to locate a historic Jesus. This Nasoraean/James the Just/Ebionite page is a project to gather together what remains of their scriptures so this original group — Christianity before Paul — awkwardly marginalized by Paul and later Roman versions of Christianity — can be more easily accessed. I do include the Gospel of Thomas on the list because of GoT Saying #12, which states that James the Just, Jesus’s brother, is his spiritual successor. Plus, saying two of the Gospel of Thomas is also found in the Gospel of the Hebrews. Mostly what has survived of Ebionite writings comes to us in the form of the Clementine literature, which is quite amazing material.

A Relationship Between the Gospel of Thomas

and the Gospel of the Hebrews

“It seems that, in constructing his ‘harmony’ [Diatessaron], he [Tatian] used not just the ‘canonical’ Gospels, but also a ‘fifth source’, whose material sometimes agreed with readings proper to texts like the Gospel to the Hebrews or the Gospel of Thomas. It has been proposed to identify this source with that Aramaic tradition of Palestinian origin, independent of the Greek Gospels, that had first conveyed a knowledge of Jesus to the peoples of Syria, pivoting, to begin with, on the region’s Jewish communities. Certainly, West Aramaic expressions or, more generally, elements left a deep mark not just and perhaps not so much on the Peshitta as on the more general exegetical and ‘spiritual’ meditation of the Churches of Syria, as many recent studies have demonstrated (cf. e.g. S. Brock, The Lost Old Syriac…).”

Gospel of Peter:

“Some apocryphal gospels testify to the reverence Jewish followers of Jesus (like the Ebionites) had for James. The Gospel of the Hebrews fragment 21 confirms the account of Paul in 1 Corinthians regarding the risen Jesus’ appearance to James*, and this is mentioned also by the Gospel of Thomas (one of the works included in the Nag Hammadi library), saying 12, which relates that the disciples asked Jesus, ‘We are aware that you will depart from us. Who will be our leader?’ Jesus said to them, ‘No matter where you come [from] it is to James the Just that you shall go, for whose sake heaven and earth have come to exist.’” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_the_Just

*Note: The Apostle Paul didn’t seem to be very acquainted with the contents of Gospels. Not much from Jesus or Gospels are to be found quoted in his letters. For Paul to be familiar with the story recorded in the Gospel of the Hebrews about the Resurrected Christ appearing to James, this indicates that some form of the Gospel of the Hebrews (Ebionites or Nazoraeans) must have been one of the earliest Gospels, somewhat older than — or contemporary with — Paul’s Letters. About:

Evangelion da-Mepharreshe Matthew, Mark, John, and Luke

There's a very old Syriac-Aramaic manuscript of the Four Gospels that even predates the Syriac Peshitta called Evangelion da-Mepharreshe. It contains some “textual variants”, differs from the Greek gospel manuscripts, and the now standardized, conformist approach used by most New Testament translators. There are two surviving editions of Evangelion da-Mepharreshe, the Curetonian Version of the Four Gospels as well as the Sinai Palimpsest, also known as The Old Syriac Gospels. Evangelion da-Mepharreshe represents a translation and “one of the earliest witnesses”* of an even older collection of gospel manuscripts that no longer exist but once were “in circulation between the second and the fifth centuries”*.:

The Didache, pronounced “DID-dah-kay”, meaning: "The Lord's Teaching Through the Twelve Apostles to the Nations", is not quite a Jewish-Christian text in its present form but represents a First Century document authored by a community aware of the Jewish-Christians, adjacent to them, and is respectful of them. Chapters one through six is the earliest section and the closest to Jewish Christianity. Includes a reference to vegetarianism as part of "The Yoke of the Lord", the ethical code of the disciples of Jesus being perfected in their faith. This scripture seems to be intended for newly converted gentile Christians.  Several translations are here. The Roberts-Donaldson English translation is the best: http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/didache.html
