Recognizing Genuine, Advanced Spiritual Masters of Inner Light and Sound -- Helpful Points
Note: Further below is an article on: The HU Chant -- The Sufi Origins of HU, and Sultan BaHU
The leader of a spiritual movement must always be the embodiment of Truth. Without a competent Master, a spiritual movement will not be capable of being an instrument in the world for the Positive Power (God).
"You can not just brush the surface of a culture and pretend that you've found an answer. We must turn inward to the deepest of our own roots to find the very best of who we are." (Ravi Shankar)
May seekers find an honest teacher and humbly sit at his/her feet. May we make use of this precious opportunity of life to enjoy being lovers of the Beloved. This is the beautiful legacy.
Truthfulness and ethics are absolutely essential for the spiritual journey. The Path of the Masters advocates adhering to a vegetarian vegan diet, abstaining from all forms of abuse, theft, violence, addiction, intoxication and dishonesty. True Masters also do not charge money for spirituality, nor do they praise, or claim succession from, anyone who has engaged in such behavior. Initiations and spiritual instruction are always offered for free.
"In Sant Mat ALL Masters have decried killing and meat-eating." (Sant Tulsi Sahib) "Those who take up the practices concerning the lower centers in the body, do take meat -- the Mohammedans and people of other religions also. But those who are anxious to rise above body-consciousnes and go into the Beyond have of necessity to eschew all that. This is the Path I have put before you. Liberation or salvation is something which starts only when you rise above body-consciousness. For that reason, vegetarianism is the first essential." (Kirpal Singh, The Night is a Jungle, Sant Bani Books)
Maharshi Mehi Paramhans, Philosophy Of Liberation:
82. The recognition of a true spiritual master is the most difficult of tasks. However, the one who has purity of character (rectitude), who practices diligently the Yoga of Sound, and who can explain clearly Sant Mat (the Path of Saints) can be accepted and trusted and given devotion as a spiritual master. A person without rectitude* or purity of character*, regardless of the other qualities just mentioned, should not be regarded as a true master.
[ * See several important links below on ethics, truthfulness, non-violence, vegetarian vegan diet, the book: Path of the Masters, western plagiarisms of Shabda Yoga, plagiarism of Sant Mat books by some, origins of the HU Chant, and other issues.]
If one has accepted a teacher and later finds him or her lacking in rectitude, that teacher should be abandoned. In spite of the teacher's exquisite knowledge, association with that teacher is not desirable if he or she is lacking in moral character*. As the aspirant is particularly affected by the teacher's moral character, it is imperative to avoid teachers without moral virtues. Purity of character is the essential quality of a teacher and if purity is lacking that teacher is no better than an animal. A teacher lacking purity of character or other essential virtues is a false spiritual teacher.
Kabir Sahab states:
"If you ought to learn the holy science of attaining the Supreme from the master, sacrifice your ego to him. For many having kept their pride, lost themselves in the current of ignorance. Surrender yourself to him who has no worldly desires, who is devoted to God and has forgone his ego. Do not take long in leaving the association of a false teacher for you will wander time and again and will not find the Entrance to the Divine Sound."
The fruits of accepting a true master are immense. Unfortunately, true teachers are few and difficult to find. A spiritual master who is wise, pure and a practitioner of the Yoga of Divine Sound gradually imparts his or her virtues to the student. The good will of the spiritual teacher cannot but help affecting the aspirant in a positive manner because one is affected by the power of a higher vibration. Section 77 describes the qualities of the teacher and how the aspirant benefits from his or her relationship with the teacher.
The master who practices the Yoga of Sound but is negligent in his moral character and in his spiritual knowledge is harmful to the seeker of spiritual knowledge. If one has accepted such a master, disregarding the importance of rectitude and knowledge, the aspirant would be deprived of the benefits of the association with a true preceptor, mentioned in the previous paragraph. In addition, in following an immoral teacher the aspirant would have the difficult task of not going astray, much less advancing on the Spiritual Path. However, without the aid of a true teacher this spiritual task can be undertaken by a few steadfast learned disciples. For most it is almost impossible to undertake this task.
Clearly the energy, physical and mental, of one person can enhance the same faculties of another person. Thus it is not surprising that the spiritual power of one who is advanced in meditation enhances the spiritual energy of the aspirant...
It is apparent that the disciple benefits from the sacred radiance (personal aura), higher knowledge, and spiritual energy of the master. Baba Devi Sahab quotes the verses of Ghat Ramayana of Tulsi Sahab in which Sant Tulsi Sahab, in giving instruction to an aspirant describes the importance of a true master:
"0 Taki ( disciple) after being veracious and
content (giving up the illusory enchantments
of the worldly things) go in the shelter of a
perfect spiritual teacher who will give you
the secret knowledge to get into Sushumma
Nadi (the door to internal spiritual knowledge)."
The saints and true teachers are known to be impartial; their blessings fall like the rain. However, the rain, while falling on all, tends to collect in deep pools just as the grace of the saints while showering on all flows rapidly and collects in the deep pools of the aspirants who are devoted. It is not surprising that the aspirants through their devotion draw the grace of the master towards them. Aspirants who give great attention to the ways of the teacher are worthy of the gift of knowledge. Obviously, not the careless one, but the one who honors the gift and cares for the receiving bowl receives the gift of the grace of the teacher. Making oneself worthy is the secret of devotion to the master, the way of gaining grace as described in the writings of the saints.
K. Narayanswami Aiyar translates a Sanskrit hymn of the third Brahmana of the Mandal Bramanopanishad as:
"Saying this, he the Purusa of the sun embraced
his pupil and made him understand it."
In his commentary on this verse, Narayanswami Aiyar states:
"This is a reference to the secret way of imparting higher Truth (the Knowledge of God). (Thirty Minor Upanishads, p.259)
It is essential that the spiritual teacher has penetrated the Realms and shattered the illusion of the material plane. Even the spark of a little teaching of Shabad-Yoga for the attainment of the Supreme as learned from a teacher will be of far greater value than the worldly teachings.
During this lifetime, the one whose consciousness at the time of samadhi (a state of deep trance) transcends all the concealments of the Non-Conscious Realms and immerses in the Sabdatet Pada is satguru (the true spiritual master). Even while engaged in activity, the consciousness of a true master remains uninvolved, and remains poised in the Essential Divine Sound.

"Reverse thy gait from the court of this
world and attain thy True Home.
The drop will merge in the Ocean, and thou
thyself will know the wonder.
The lost treasure will be found and thy true
Self will be revealed.
He who has solved this riddle, 0 Tulsi,
is indeed a true Saint."
(Param Sant Tulsi Sahab, Shabdavali)
Swami Ji Maharaj/Sant Radhasoami Sahib (Shiv Dayal Singh) from Sar Bachan Radhaswami:
251. If a person at the outset finds a teacher who does not know the mystery of Shabd, but subsequently finds a Sat Guru versed in Shabd, he should give up the former and submit himself to the Sat Guru. To quote a couplet: "Do not hesitate to give up a false (imperfect) guru, otherwise you will not find the portals of Shabd and will go on missing the right path again and again." (Sar Bachan Prose, Book Two, Sayings of Soami Ji Maharaj)
252. He, who first meets a guru who knows the secret of Shabd but has not yet attained perfection, but later on meets the Sat Guru who is perfect in Shabd practice, should consider the previous guru as included in the perfect Sat Guru and take the protection of the Latter. (Sar Bachan Prose, Book Two)
The last part of the last sentence again, from another translation of Sar Bachan Prose: "...he should consider his previous Guru as present within the Satguru and seek the protection of the Satguru."
Masters say: "An intense longing to meet God during one's lifetime is the first and foremost qualification for Initiation. 'Seek, and ye shall find', is the principle."
Consider the following as the requirements to attain liberation: 1) Trust and belief in God; 2) commitment to seek the Divine within; 3) devotion to a spiritual master; 4) listening to the teaching of the spiritual discourse including study of the teachings of the saints and the scriptures; and, 5) diligent meditation practice. (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)
The number of initiates of spiritual Masters continues to rapidly grow in the Western countries. Sant Mat is now as much Western as Eastern.////////

The HU Chant -- The Sufi Origins of HU, and Sultan BaHU, By James Bean -- Copyright May, 2001
The HOO (HU) is the Sufi equivalent to the Hindu OOOM (AUM) chant. According to the Sant tradition of India, HU is a sacred name that is esoterically associated with Trikuti, the Region also known as Brahm Lok. The True Name/Naam of God is the Sound Current, and for some Sufis, this Name HU also stands for the Sound Current or Saut-e Sarmad, the True Kalma (Word). The HU is chanted as a Name of God as well as it can be used to refer to the Sound Current (Music of the Spheres).
To be sure HU is a wonderful Name of God used in the east and in the middle east.
HU was first made popular in the west by Julian P. Johnson, an influential Sant Mat author and initiate of Huzur Baba Sawan Singh. He mentions the name HU in his classic Sant Mat/Shabda Yoga book: "Path of the Masters," in a section titled, "The Sufi Idea of the Divine Vadan." A few decades later, others reading "The Path of the Masters" would pick up on this discussion of the HU. In this book Johnson extensively quoted from a Sufi book by Hazrat Khan called, "The Mysticism of Sound," volume two of the Sufi Message Series. "An extremely interesting Sufi effort to interpret the Surat Shabd of the Masters is the following extract by Hazrat Inayat Khan. It shows how this central idea of the great Shabd has taken hold of all mystic thought..." (Julian Johnson)
Khan mostly used the word HU as a term for Divine Sound -- the True Name of the Nameless One. Hazrat Khan on HU as the Sound or breath of God:
"The Supreme Being has been called by various names in different languages, but the mystics have known Him as HU, the natural name, not-man-made, the only name of the Nameless, which all nature constantly proclaims."
Khan also thought of the name HU as a kind of proto-name that can be found contained within many sacred names of God throughout the world in various languages:
Allah HU Akbar,
AHUd,
YaHUva (Jehovah/YHVH),
YesHUa,
HUda,
AHUra Mazda,
and even in the word HUman, as in human being.
Hur in Arabic means the beauties of the Heavens, its real meaning is the
expression of heavenly beauty. ZuHUr in Arabic means manifestation, especially that of God in nature. AHUra Mazda is a name of God known to the Zoroastrians. This first word AHUra suggests HU, upon which the whole name is built. All of these examples signify the origin of God in the word HU; and the life of God in everything and being. (Hazrat Khan, "The Mysticism of Sound")
There are two books that have been published recently making this wonderful poetry of Sultan BaHU the Sufi Master available in our part of the world:
1) "Death Before Dying -- The Sufi Poems of Sultan Bahu," Translated by Jamal J. Elias, University of California Press. This could be ordered through any good bookstore.
2) "Sultan Bahu," Translated by J.R. Puri, Published by RS Books, and it has many references to the sacred name HU as well as Inner Sound and Light Meditation. It's not available through bookstores but can be ordered by writing:

The HU Chant of Sultan BaHU
Sultan Bahu (1628 -- 1691) was a Sufi Master of the Light and Sound of God (Qadriya Order) who lived in northern India.
The following ecstatic poems, translated from Punjabi, sometimes
contain the word "HU," pronounced "WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO," a name of God which symbolizes and even mimics to some extent, the Kalma or Word, also known as the Sound Current -- the Music of the Spheres.
In most all of his poems, in the original language every other line
ends with a HOO, for example:
akkheen surkh te mooheen zardee,
har wallon dil aaheen HOO
Muhaa muhaar khushboi waalaa,
pahuntaa vanj kadaaeen HOO
Ishq mushk na chhuppe raihnde,
zaahir theen uthaaeen HOO
Naam faqeer tinhaan daa Baahoo,
jin laamakaanee jaaeen HOO
The name "Bahu" means, "with God."
Then, in an ecstasy of love,
you will repeat the Name of HU constantly,
devoting every breath of your life
in contemplation of Him.
Only when your soul merges
in the Essence of the Lord,
will you deserve the name 'Bahu.'
HU is within, HU is without,
HU pervades everything;
where then is Bahu to find HU [Allah, God]?
He has wounded his own heart,
he has tortured his own soul
with austerities of all manner,
with worship of all kinds.
Having read millions of books,
he has also come to be called 'wise.'
But the name 'faqir' befits only him, O Bahu,
whose very grave breathes life!
Mystics live in this world as HU personified;
they practice the Name that is the essence of God.
They live in HU --
beyond religion,
beyond belief and unbelief,
beyond life and death.
If you explore the Path within yourself,
you will find God nearby, through the Royal Vein.
He now lives in me and I in Him, O Bahu:
not only distance from Him
but even nearness to Him
have become irrelevant!
HU is within, HU is without,
HU always reverberates in my heart.
The wound in my heart aches constantly
with the unabating pain of HU's love.
The darkness of ignorance departs
from the heart lit by HU [God, Allah].
I sacrifice myself to the one, O Bahu,
who has realized the significance of HU.
("Sultan Bahu", Published by Radha Soami Satsang Beas,
