Baba Jaimal Singh On Daily Spiritual Practice - Also: Often Used Mystic Terms of the Masters

"Particularly, just before going to sleep, see that there is no worldly desire or any kind of desire in the mind. Then repeat the Names. Then repeat the word 'Radhasoami'."

Baba Jaimal Singh: "Now I write to you a little about 'Parmarth': When you are free from your work and have leisure, develop that condition of the mind which enjoys 'sushupti' (deep sleep). Particularly, just before going to sleep, see that there is no worldly desire or any kind of desire in the mind. Then repeat the Names. Then repeat the word 'Radhasoami'. Go on putting 'surat' and 'nirat' in the Dhun and listen to the Sound with love and devotion of the 'nij man', and with an intense longing. And you will feel the bliss of the Dhun or the Sound. You may not be able to keep the attention there for long, but you will enjoy the bliss. Practise this every day, whenever you have time or leisure.

"You should not indulge in those actions which are fruitless -- whether they are of the world or of 'Parmarth'. Your spare time should not be wasted because you are allowed a fixed span of time. You take twenty-four thousand breaths every day. They should be utilized either in the performance of your worldly duties or in 'Parmarth', and the mind should be kept under control -- within the bounds of the Satguru's instructions. Then all worldly and spiritual work will go on very nicely and automatically.

NOTES - GLOSSARY OF MYSTIC TERMS: 

"Radhaswami: Descriptive Name of God; initially used by Swami Shiv Dayal Singh Ji; literally, "The Lord of the Soul";

Dhun: Sound Current, synonymous with Shabd, Naam, Logos, etc..., lit. “Tune or Melody”;

Nij Man or Mana: true abode at the third eye center;

Surat: lit. “Face”; in the spiritual sense, attention of the soul, or the 'face' of the soul, which is understood to be an outward expression of the soul; also, the soul's faculty of intrinsic hearing; one of the two faculties left to the soul after leaving the realm of the sense organs behind; see also Nirat (soul's faculty of seeing);

Nirat: lit. “Absorption in”; in the spiritual sense, the soul's faculty or power of intrinsic seeing; one of the two faculties (seeing and hearing) left to the soul after leaving the realm of the sense organs behind; see also Surat (soul's faculty of hearing);

Surat Shabd Yoga: The means of reconnection with God; lit. “Yoking the Soul or the soul's hearing faculty (Surat) to the Sound Current (Shabd)”; also provides the power of practical discernment, enabling the attention to rise higher by moving on through the Nirat's (power of seeing) absorption in the Inner Light;

Parmarth - Parmartha: (1) The highest and most sublime truth, true Parmartha spiritual knowledge, knowledge about Supreme Being. 

(2) Truth, reality, earnestness. (3) The best end, highest object. (4) Salvation, spiritual welfare, spiritual regeneration. (5) Religion. 

(6) Religious pursuits. (7) Spiritual matters and affairs. (8) Parmarth is the performance of Bhakti (devotion) and Abhyas (internal practices) with a view to extricating Mana (mind) and Surat (spirit) from the region of Maya;

Parmarthi: (1) One in search or pursuit of Parmarth, a follower of Parmarth. (2) Relating to Parmarth or the highest truth or spiritual knowledge;

Bhajan: Devotional practice of listening to the inner Sound Current; 

Simran: Remembrance of God by repeating a name or names of God; Repetition of names or thoughts; in Sant Mat, the simran of worldly thoughts is controlled through the Simran of the Five Charged Names, repeated by an initiate throughout the day and when sitting for meditation as a means of collecting the thought currents at the Third Eye Center; also used as a password of sorts to higher planes and protection from Negative Power influences;

The focus of the Sant Satgurus, the Saints of India (Santmat, RadhaSoami, The Path of the Masters) is not upon constructing earthly temples, building organizational structures, or temples of the mind. Rather, they guide their students into entering the Temple of the Spirit. The Portal or Doorway to this Temple is within, at the Third Eye Center. Masters say: "An intense longing to meet the Supreme Lord during one's lifetime is the first and foremost qualification for Initiation. 'Seek, and ye shall find', is the principle'" (Kirpal Singh). Swami Ji Maharaj (Seth Shiv Dayal Singh, Sant Radhaswami Saheb)

Baba Devi Sahab was in possession of a hand-written manuscript of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras printed at Hathras itself in the year of 1896, and had it published: “The book Ghat Ramayan is said to be the work of Tulsi Saheb of Hathras. The first edition of this book was published by one Munshi Devi Prasad Saheb, alias Devi Sahib. Subsequently, an edition was brought out in the year 1911 from Belvedere Press…” (The Esoteric Meaning of the Ramayan, by S.D. Maheshwari, Agra)

Above is from my booklet on the Essential Teachings of Baba Devi Sahab of Moradabad.

Was just looking at a new English translation of the Preface of Tulsi Sahib's Ghat Ramayan authored by Baba Devi. He begins by listing various planes and chakras: "Anaam (Nameless/Wordless), Agam, and Alakh, Sat Lok (Naam/Name/Sound/ Word), Bhanwar Gufaa (Whirling or Spiralling Cave), Mahaasunna (Greater Void), and Sunna or Shoonya (Void), Trikuti, Sahastradal Kamal (Thousand Petalled Lotus), Shat Chakra or Ajna Chakra, Kantha Chakra, Hridaya Chakra, Naabhi Chakra, Indri Chakra, Guda Chakra", and includes short paragraphs about each of these.

Om Parkash Kaushal writes: “They [the parents of Seth Shiv Dayal Singh] were the followers of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras. Thus the family guru can be the guru of the child.” (“The Radhasoami Movement”, page 24)

“Gradually, Tulsi Sahab attracted a large number of followers and disciples from among the high caste Brahmins as well as the low caste Sudras. They came from the poor classes, as also from the affluent. He used to visit towns and cities in U.P. and among his disciples were Seth Dilwali Singh Sahab of Agra [Soami Ji’s father], his wife Mahamaya, his mother, his mother in-law and sister. They were all keen disciples of Tulsi Sahab.  Baba Devi told, ‘I am disciple of Sant Tulsi Sahab and he himself has blessed me.’ Then Shaligram Sahab became very glad to hear it and told [Baba Devi] that ‘you were the member of my own family because, Sant Tulsi Sahib was my most reverend.’ Rai Sahab further explained about the association of his Guru (master), Shiv Dayal Swami Ji and Sant Tulsi Sahab’s disciple Giridhari Das. “Soamiji in his Discourses has said that his surat descended into the dark regions of Mahasunn but could neither locate the bottom or the end of it nor did it feel it worthwhile to go down any further. From corresponding with Prof. Daniel Gold I am told that other gurus of the Hathras lineage have also composed the same heaven ascending style of esoteric poetry like we find with Swami Ji and Saligram in the Sar Bachan and Prem Bani volumes, that this too, rather than being a new invention of Radhaswami, represents a continuation of the earlier Hathras approach to mystic poetry, bani and bhajans.

David Lane, accompanied by Mark Juergensmeyer, recalling a visit to India and an encounter with Sant Prakash Das of the Tulsi Sahib Hathras Mandir: “…The Mahant we spoke with in Hathras (1978) said Tulsi gave out the Five Names…. He was part of Tulsi’s lineage.” (Radhasoami Studies)

Soamiji replicating Hathras teachings by way of past life memories or tapping into some astral library or cosmic bank of knowledge from some higher plane to learn of the Five Names and of the path of Sat Naam and Anami as taught in Hathras would be quite the bizarre stretch of sectarian imagination indeed. Based on statements from Sant Garib Das Ji and others, the case is very strong for Swami Ji Maharaj (Shiv Dayal Singh of Agra) being an initiate of Sant Tulsi Sahib and associating with his successor Girdhari Das, thus explaining why his path, like Hathras, was of that of Sat Naam Anami, why he also initiated people with the Five Names and taught other practices reflecting the Sant Mat path that he and his family associated with, the satsang of Tulsi Sahib based in Hathras and Lucknow.
