Selections from the Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry of Soami Ji Maharaj

Selections from the Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry of Soami Ji Maharaj

"You will not find any trace or sign of the Master in pilgrimages, fasts, rituals, or temples. The poet Rumi says: 'The mosques and temples are within the saints. That is where God resides.'"

"Seek the Beloved within yourself. If you are anxious to meet your Beloved, do not stray in the world."

"When your eye turns inward in the brain and you see the firmament within, and your spirit leaves the body and rises upward, you will see the Akash in which is located Sahas-dal-kanwal, the thousand petals of which perform the various functions pertaining to the three worlds. Its effulgence will exhilarate your spirit."

"Realize your real form within, and then proceed further with your Surat.*"  (* attention-faculty of the soul)

"My dear, listen to what I say. Turn within yourself and behold light."

"Behold the marvellous Jyoti (flame) within yourself. Radhasoami* has opened the spring of Bhakti."

"Shabd* is ringing within you. Hear it with rapt attention."   (* sound current)

"Listen to Anhad Shabd within, says Radhasoami."

"Slowly and gradually you will gain stability. There is no other remedy but to perform Bhakti*.  (* bhakti, love and devotion)

One day your imperfect Bhakti will become perfect. Give up hypocrisy and engage in Bhakti.

Insincere Bhakti will not do. Perform true and sincere Bhakti, no matter if it is imperfect.

Radhasoami graciously declares that you should perform Bhakti in whatever manner you can."

"Therefore, perform Bhakti and make your life fruitful."

The Sant Mat Guru Lineage Revealed: From Kabir to Sant Tulsi Sahib and Radhasoami, Compiled by James Bean

The Sant Mat Guru Lineage Revealed: From Kabir to Sant Tulsi Sahib and Radhasoami, Compiled by James Bean

"This artwork shows King Ravana attacking Sant Kabir in His Incarnation as Maninder during the Treta Yuga or Silver Age as He approached the palace. The gatekeeper described Kabir's form by saying 'O Ravana, His form is white. He has a white necklace, and His tilak is beautiful. His beauty is as the moon! His clothes are white and everything He has is white.' Maninder held a piece of straw as a shield, and mighty Ravana was striking against that. The Anurag Sagar of Kabir is a great epic and enigmatic poem describing Kabir's battle throughout Eternity which eventually rescued all Souls from Kal, the Negative Power." (Bill Yee)

Big Picture View of the Sant Mat Guru Lineage, the Path of the Masters from Kabir to Modern Times: Kabir to Sant Dharam Das to One of the Successors of Dharam Das to Sat Seheb to Sant Dariya Sahib of Bihar to Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras and Successors Including Sant Girdhari Sahib of Lucknow to Swami Ji Maharaj of Agra

"The fact that Dariya refers to several Saints and mystics of the fifteenth, sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, such as Kabir (1398—1518 c.e), Dharmdas (successor of Kabir), Nanak (1469-1538 c.e.), Nam Dev (1398-1518 c.e.), Mira Bai (1498-1546 c.e.) and Goswami Tulsi Das (1532-1623 c.e.), and makes no mention of Saints of the later period, lends support to the above dates (1674—1780 C.E.). This shows that he left this world only thirty-eight years before the birth of the famous Saint of Agra, Seth Shiv Dayal Singh, better known as Soami Ji (1818-1878 c.e.)." (from the Introduction to, Sant Dariya Sahib - Saint of Bihar)

"There are some who claim

To be followers of Guru Nanak and Kabir,

Yet they eat the meat of goats and other animals.

This indeed is an unutterably despicable act."

-- Sant Dariya Sahib of Bihar

The 2017 edition of, Tulsi Sahib - Saint of Hathras published by Beas mentions, "...Dariya Sahib (who may have been Tulsi Sahib's own Guru)", as Sant Dariya Sahib of Bihar is the one-and-only contemporary guru named and quoted by Tulsi Sahib. Dariya was a very obscure figure during the time of Tulsi Sahib and remains so to-this-day but Sant Tulsi put him on the same level as Kabir, Nanak, Mirabai, Namdev, etc... As I argue, this strongly indicates Sant Dariya was Tulsi's guru (if Tulsi Sahib was initiated at a young age), or that Tulsi was initiated by one of Dariya’s immediate successors if he was initiated later in life. Tulsi Sahib's references to Sant Dariya is analogous to someone in the 1930s saying that Hazur Baba Sawan Singh was one of the greatest of masters (the Great Master). Anyone saying that would have very likely been a Radhasoami. So for Tulsi Sahib to be saying this about Sant Dariya, as I argue, strongly suggests some actual connection. Simple as that.

Sant Tulsi Sahib's List of Sants

"Nanak, Dadu, Dariya Saheb, Mira Bai, Soor Das, Kabir and Nabhaji have all reached the Nabh (sky, high region) and have given out the secrets. Their Surats have got across and merged there." -- Sant Tulsi Sahib

"Said Tulsi Saheb ‘Listen, I will now explain what I mean by Sant. To mention a few Sants, I pick up the names of Dadu, Mira, Nabha, Nanak, Dariya Saheb and Soor Das. Kabir’s name, I mention again. And there have been many other Sants."

This is a Shabd (Hymn) of Sant Dariya Saheb embedded in the writings of Sant Tulsi Sahib and it sounds similar in style of Swami Ji's Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry:

"The gateway to the August Darbar of the Lord has opened to me.

"Lightning flashes and darts forth like a fast current, illuminating like a shooting star. The veil of clouds over the moon is removed and the dense darkness vanishes.

"When love and yearning are engendered in Surat, it beholds the moon-lit courtyard. Surat moves about happily in the firmament and opens the gate to Bank-nal.

"Like a spider moving along the thread drawn out of itself, Surat, ascending on the bow, rises up like a current. On meeting the Beloved, Surat merges in Him the way a stream merges in river.

"I have seen the Form which, indeed, is formless and beyond all description. It is boundless, having neither beginning nor end. Dariya Saheb says that when his mind became humble and meek, he was able to cross the ocean of existence." (one of many examples of Sant Dariya Sahib being cited by Sant Tulsi Sahib)

In the Radhasoami Faith Sant Tulsi Sahib is also named as one of the greatest of Sants in the history of India:

"A few names of perfect and true Saints and true Sadhs and Faqirs who manifested themselves in the last 700 years are given here. They are: Kabir Sahab, Tulsi Sahab, Jagjivan Sahab, Garib Das ji, Paltu Sahab, Guru Nanak, Daduji, Tulsi Das ji, Nabha ji, Swami Hari Das ji, Sur Das ji and Raidas ji and among Mohammedans, Shams-i-Tabrez, Maulana Rumi, Hafiz, Sarmad, Mujaddid and Alfasani. From a perusal of the discourses and the writings of these Great Personalities one can know how far they had reached and what was the region they had come from." (Sar Bachan Radhasoami Prose, Book I, 39, Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram's Introduction to Swami Ji, The Essence of the Teachings, Dayalbagh translation)

Excerpted from the Introduction to, The Anurag Sagar, by Russell Perkins

"The alert reader of Swami Ji's Sar Bachan or the books of Sant Kirpal Singh will notice many points of contact. Tulsi Sahib devoted a major portion of one of his principal books to a detailed commentary on certain aspects of the poem. Baba Jaimal Singh considered it to be the most authoritative book on the teachings of the Masters as the following account by his disciple and successor Sawan Singh shows:

"'On the fourth day I went to attend Satsang. Baba Ji [Baba Jaimal Singh] was at that time explaining the meaning of Jap Ji Sahib. Well, I started my volley of questions-so much so that the audience got tired and began to feel restless at the large number of questions I had put ... Now he wanted to point out the way, but I had read Vedanta. When I read Gurbani, my opinion was different; when I read Gita my opinion was again different, and I was unable to come to a decision. At last I applied for eight days leave to enable me to study the teachings of Baba Ji. He advised me to read Kabir Sahib's Anurag Sagar. I immediately ordered eight copies of this book from Bombay so that I could also give some to my friends...

"'After several conferences with Baba Ji, I was thoroughly convinced and received initiation from him on the 15th day of October in 1894.'

"That Baba Sawan Singh continued to hold Anurag Sagar in high regard after he became Master is shown by the following account, written by one of his secretaries:

"'Hazur [Baba Sawan Singh] one day told Seth Vasdev, whose car is always at Hazur's disposal, that he should read Kabir Sahib's Anurag Sagar (The Ocean of Intense Love). Hazur said that without studying it, one cannot fully understand the difference between Kal (the negative power) and Dayal Mat (the Path of the true and Merciful God), nor can one fully grasp the teachings of Sant Mat.'" ([Rai Sahib Munshi Ram, "With the Three Masters", Vol. 2, p.187, old edition] Anurag Sagar - The Ocean of Love, Sant Bani Ashram)

The writings and hymns of Dariya Sahib's Guru Sat Saheb and Sant Dariya Sahib represent a kind of sequel to, or continuation of, the Anurag Sagar.

“After some time passed in this way, he [Sant Dariya] was blessed with the grace of his Satguru and obtained the gift of the holy Word or the Sound Current. Dariya refers to this fact as follows:

"After some time was spent, knowledge arose

“And I realized that the true Lord [Sat Saheb] had showered his grace.

"He showered his grace with the exceedingly blissful Sound Current,

"And I continued my holy repetition with love and devotion. With the deepening of love, the reflection became pure

“And I obtained the knowledge imparted by the Guru, the true Nam in entirety."

"It was at the age of twenty that Dariya had the full illumination of inner wisdom. As he says:

"After twenty years had passed,

"The reservoir of inner illumination welled up,

"So that I had the inner experience of all

"And I realized the state of emancipation, free from the cycle of the world."

"Dariya took the members of his family into confidence and explained to them the way to obtain the secret wisdom through the Satguru. He emphasized the importance of abstaining from eating meat and fish and of abandoning the worship of various gods and goddesses. He pointed out that sages and Saints alone are worthy of our worship. Dariya's parents, brothers and wife -- all accepted his teachings. It is at this time that he completed his first work, Dariya Sagar."

Rare Words from Sat Saheb, the Guru of Dariya Sahib

“The ultimate Realm is Akah* (Unspeakable)

Which is fully contained within the inner mirror.

The Akah* is the source of true Naam (the Sound Current)

This (Naam) is the truest spiritual technique.”

(Sat Saheb)

[*NOTE: The term “Akah” has been used by Kabir also as the ultimate Abode of Anami Purush.]

“You have been given the seal to imprint the souls,

And you know that the transaction is carried on

through the True Name (SATNAM).

“Whosoever comes, bearing the imprint of your hand

I will take him to the other shore.

“Priceless indeed, is my Name.

Let one hold fast to it with proper concentration.

Near such a person Kal [lord of time, death and illusion] shall not go.

While rising or sitting, let him fix his attention on it,

And let him develop love for the Divine Light within.

Let him abandon all deceptive worship

of the gods and the goddesses.

Let him be absorbed in his real Lord,

realizing Him to be the Truth.

While rising and sitting, the Supreme Lord

should be the center of his attention,

And let him remain merged into the Sound Current.

By taking refuge under the Truth in such a way,

he will certainly overcome Kal.”

-- Sat Saheb the spiritual master of Dariya Sahib (speaking to Dariya about his future mission as a Sant Sat Guru. The quote is from K.N. Upadhyaya's book, one of the few in English to feature excerpts from the many writings of Sant Dariya. And, via email, Domain Singh of the Sant Dariya Mission has expressed to me his approval of Upadhyaya's book.)

Says Kabir:

"I was being crushed

like seeds in an oil-press --

but the True Guru set me free.

Love, old as all my births,

flickered once again."

(Songs of Kabir in the Adi Granth, Nirmal Dass, SUNY Press, NY)

Light and Sound on The Path (Sant Mat, Radhasoami, Surat Shabd Yoga, The Path of the Masters, Bhakti of the Inner Light and Sound)

Light and Sound on The Path (Sant Mat, Radhasoami, Surat Shabd Yoga, The Path of the Masters, Bhakti of the Inner Light and Sound)

Happy 70th Birthday Baba Ram Singh Ji!

Below is excerpted from a satsang discourse of Baba Ram Singh commenting on verses of the Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry of Soami Ji Maharaj, which he often does in satsang.

"Swami Ji Maharaj also is addressing our soul as a hansa, or as a swan, because swans are pure birds and the soul is also pure. He is addressing the soul and He is telling the soul, 'You leave the outward things and leave the water outside and you come within. God Almighty has kept a lot of treasures within. He has kept an ocean of Nectar within. You come and take that.'

"'Saagar ksheer bharaa ghat beethar,

Peevo surat thaani.

Jag ko jaar dhaso nab andhar,

Mandar parakh nishaani.'

"He tells us to come within, but what stops us from going within is our attachment outside to this world. And till we overcome those attachments and entanglements outside, the soul will never be able to withdraw and go inside.

"The Masters give us Simran because that is a means to cut out our entanglements and enable the soul to leave the nine doors and come to the Tenth Door.

"By doing Simran and Dhyan, we will be able to mold our mind and get the gunas, or get the attributes, that are necessary for us to go within. All the Saints Who have gone within in the past, They have all made that effort of doing Their Bhajan Simran, and then They have been able to go within. And all in the future also, will be able to go within only when they make that effort of doing their Bhajan Simran.

"So, that possibility of going within is for everyone who does Bhajan and Simran. And we often delude ourselves, thinking that it is only Mahatmas have done the Bhajan Simran because They were Ready-Made Souls and They could go inside, but we are sinners and we are not able to do this. So, this is the thought of a lazy mind. And if we overcome that and we do our Bhajan Simran, then we will definitely be able to go within.

"Every human being, be it a male or a female, has the capability of going within. We should have that enthusiasm and we should have that commitment to do that meditation and we will definitely be able to go within...."

"'Guru moorath tu dhaar hiye mein,

Man ke sang kyun firat nimaani.

Tera kaaz kare guru poore,

Sun le anahad baani.'

"Swami Ji Maharaj says, 'Your work will be done by a True Master.' And He says, 'Why aren’t you listening to that Anahad Shabd, that Sound Current, which is resonating at the Eye Center?'

"That Holy Sound Current has emanated from God Almighty and It has come down through the planes and is resonating at Eye Center. And from there, it is illuminating this body. And it is having the functionality of this body.

"So, Swami Ji Maharaj says, 'You manifest that Sound Current.'

He says, 'That Satguru Who is going to help you, He is within. You go and manifest that Holy Sound Current, which is His manifestation. And if you manifest that Sound Current, your going back and forth in this ocean of life and death will come to an end.'

Sant Tulsidas says: "The true teacher is the one who gives knowledge without ignorance, who speaks about Light without darkness, and about the Formless God without the God with forms. That teacher I deem as being true."

Who is worthy to be called a true or accomplished teacher? The true teacher is the one who has transcended the realm of ignorance and darkness and is established in the realm of knowledge and Light. The true teacher having gone beyond the material realm of forms is established in the Formless State of the Infinite (the Divine). The accomplished spiritual teacher, who shows the path to experiencing the Reality, does so, only after testing this knowledge on the touchstone of his/her own personal experience. The knowledge of a true spiritual teacher is not simply based on intellectual knowledge, but also in personal experience.

Sant Kabir Sahab emphatically asserts: "You speak what is written down [intellectual knowledge], and I speak from what I have seen [inner experience]."

Therefore, we need a spiritual guru who will not only be a knowledgeable teacher, but will also be morally sound and actively practicing what he/she teaches.

Shiv Dayal Singh's Path of Sat Naam Anami - Sant Mat Radhasoami History, by James Bean

Shiv Dayal Singh's Path of Sat Naam Anami - Studies in Sant Mat Radhasoami History, by James Bean

Swami Ji Maharaj (Seth Shiv Dayal Singh, Sant Radhaswami Saheb)

Baba Devi Sahab was in possession of a hand-written manuscript of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras printed at Hathras itself in the year of 1896, and had it published: “The book Ghat Ramayan is said to be the work of Tulsi Saheb of Hathras. The first edition of this book was published by one Munshi Devi Prasad Saheb, alias Devi Sahib. Subsequently, an edition was brought out in the year 1911 from Belvedere Press…” (The Esoteric Meaning of the Ramayan, by S.D. Maheshwari, Agra)

Above is from my booklet on the Essential Teachings of Baba Devi Sahab of Moradabad.

Was just looking at a new English translation of the Preface of Tulsi Sahib's Ghat Ramayan authored by Baba Devi. He begins by listing various planes and chakras: "Anaam (Nameless/Wordless), Agam, and Alakh, Sat Lok (Naam/Name/Sound/ Word), Bhanwar Gufaa (Whirling or Spiralling Cave), Mahaasunna (Greater Void), and Sunna or Shoonya (Void), Trikuti, Sahastradal Kamal (Thousand Petalled Lotus), Shat Chakra or Ajna Chakra, Kantha Chakra, Hridaya Chakra, Naabhi Chakra, Indri Chakra, Guda Chakra", and includes short paragraphs about each of these.

Om Parkash Kaushal writes: “They [the parents of Seth Shiv Dayal Singh] were the followers of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras. Thus the family guru can be the guru of the child.” (“The Radhasoami Movement”, page 24)

“Gradually, Tulsi Sahab attracted a large number of followers and disciples from among the high caste Brahmins as well as the low caste Sudras. They came from the poor classes, as also from the affluent. He used to visit towns and cities in U.P. and among his disciples were Seth Dilwali Singh Sahab of Agra [Soami Ji’s father], his wife Mahamaya, his mother, his mother in-law and sister. They were all keen disciples of Tulsi Sahab. He used to pay visits to them in Agra, stay in their home in Panni Gali, and hold satsangs there.” (Entry for Param Sant Tulsi Sahib in, “Radhasoami White Paper on the Religion of Sants and RadhaSoami Faith”, published by Dayal Bagh in Agra)

Baba Devi's Conversation With Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram of Agra (The Radhasoami Satsang)

Baba Devi told, ‘I am disciple of Sant Tulsi Sahab and he himself has blessed me.’ Then Shaligram Sahab became very glad to hear it and told [Baba Devi] that ‘you were the member of my own family because, Sant Tulsi Sahib was my most reverend.’ Rai Sahab further explained about the association of his Guru (master), Shiv Dayal Swami Ji and Sant Tulsi Sahab’s disciple Giridhari Das. He disclosed that his Guru Shiv Dayal ji used to tell that he (Shiv Dayal) had been greatly benefited with the association of Baba Giridhari Das, a disciple of Sant Tulsi Sahab.” (“The Biography of Baba Devi Sahab”, excerpted in English at the SadguruMehi website on a web page titled, “Life And Teachings of Baba Devi Sahab”).

“Soamiji in his Discourses has said that his surat descended into the dark regions of Mahasunn but could neither locate the bottom or the end of it nor did it feel it worthwhile to go down any further. Thereafter, his surat adhering to the signs as revealed to him by his Gurus ascended upwards. Here Soamiji says that it was the inner Mercy of his Satguru Tulsi Saheb and that of Maharaj Girdhari Das Ji whose Satsang he attended for a very long period of time.” (Anmol Vachan of Garib Das)

"Shabad from Girdhari's Disciple Radhasoami [Soami Ji Maharaj]

"My MASTER introduced me to the identity of

Soul,

and I realised the self as highest element. (Main)

The Formless Purush is beyond the second door.

Beholding Him, the soul became blissful. (1)

Inside this body is the whole creation of the Vedas,

The Perfect MASTER showed this to me. (2)

Inside is seen brilliant sunlight

and in the inner sky

a huge ocean. (3)

Inside the inner cave are billions of suns."

(Hymn of Swami Ji Maharaj from the Lucknow Satsang including mention of "Girdhari's disciple Radhasoami")

From corresponding with Prof. Daniel Gold I am told that other gurus of the Hathras lineage have also composed the same heaven ascending style of esoteric poetry like we find with Swami Ji and Saligram in the Sar Bachan and Prem Bani volumes, that this too, rather than being a new invention of Radhaswami, represents a continuation of the earlier Hathras approach to mystic poetry, bani and bhajans.

David Lane, accompanied by Mark Juergensmeyer, recalling a visit to India and an encounter with Sant Prakash Das of the Tulsi Sahib Hathras Mandir: “…The Mahant we spoke with in Hathras (1978) said Tulsi gave out the Five Names…. He was part of Tulsi’s lineage.” (Radhasoami Studies)

“The Faith I had given out was that of Sat Naam and Anami." (Swami Ji Maharaj, Last Words, Dayalbagh translation)

"317. When Swamiji Maharaj left his body in the year 1878, he had advised that his belief was in Satnaam and Anami..." (Anmol Vachan of Sant Garib Das, one of the successors of Swami Ji Maharaj)

Soamiji replicating Hathras teachings by way of past life memories or tapping into some astral library or cosmic bank of knowledge from some higher plane to learn of the Five Names and of the path of Sat Naam and Anami as taught in Hathras would be quite the bizarre stretch of sectarian imagination indeed. Based on statements from Sant Garib Das Ji and others, the case is very strong for Swami Ji Maharaj (Shiv Dayal Singh of Agra) being an initiate of Sant Tulsi Sahib and associating with his successor Girdhari Das, thus explaining why his path, like Hathras, was of that of Sat Naam Anami, why he also initiated people with the Five Names and taught other practices reflecting the Sant Mat path that he and his family associated with, the satsang of Tulsi Sahib based in Hathras and Lucknow.

Satsang Commentary by Baba Somanath on Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry Verses of Soamiji Maharaj

Satsang Commentary by Baba Somanath on Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry Verses of Soamiji Maharaj

Soamiji Maharaj: "With a gentle heart and a mind full of compassion, set out to solve the mystery of life."

Baba Somanath: Therefore, He says that you should first make your own heart gentle. Make it spotless and pure. When you are true within, then you are ready to set out in search of spirituality.

Soamiji Maharaj: Leave this plane of the senses behind, abandon the sensual pleasures,

And keep your surat (soul) constantly anchored in the Shabd.

Baba Somanath: Swami Ji’s bani is written in very simple language, and everyone can understand the meaning of His words. But the deeper meaning that He is conveying can only be grasped by someone with first-hand inner experience. What does He tell us first of all? Make your heart gentle and spotlessly pure. And how can this be done? At present, your heart is defiled with the sense pleasures and worldly passions, and until you remove all this dross, the heart cannot be purified.

But once you remove all the sense pleasures and indulgences from your heart, then mercy, continence, peace, and love will make their home there. When your consciousness radiates purity, when no thought of the world remains in your within, then attune your attention to the Shabd. Once your soul is purified, since the Shabd is also pure, then the two will unite, and the conscious Power of the Shabd will transport your soul to the higher regions.

The technique is very simple; nevertheless, as Tulsidas tells us:

सकल पदारथ है जग माहीं ।

कर्म हीन नर पावत नाहीं ।

"All things are available in this world,

But you cannot achieve them without effort."

Baba Somanath: This world is filled with good things. But the karmas we made in the past have shaped our intellect. Our intellect guides our deeds, and we receive the fruits of happiness and sorrow accordingly. So, the Saints teach us this simple method. First, purify your heart and draw back the fluttering veils of sense pleasures and evil tendencies that are obscuring your consciousness. Once your consciousness has become purified, then merge into the Shabd and ascend within. The technique is so simple, but as long as our heart remains lifeless and hard like stone, we will not be able to discern the subtle currents of higher consciousness flowing within us.

Soamiji Maharaj: Take the True Essence from the Guru, and increase your love for His lotus feet.

Baba Somanath: Now, along with this, He tells us that if anyone thinks that they can achieve success through their own efforts, then they are deluded because this is not possible. Because whatever we say on our own is based on the speculation and conjecture of the intellect. But the intellect itself is stark blind and unconscious. We have to take the guidance from the Inner Conscious Power; whether we call it Guru, or Light, or Soul, or Naam, it is all one and the same.  So, first, we have to go to the Guru learn the Essential and True Path from Him. And then, according to His teachings, fix your contemplation in the Guru’s lotus feet. Tulsidas tells us:

श्री गुरु चरण नख मणि गण ज्योति,

सुमिरत दिव्य दृष्टि हिय होती ।।

"Dazzling light flashes from the nails of the Guru’s feet.

When I remember Him, His divine vision fills my heart."

Baba Somanath: When you go on contemplating, then gradually your sense of I-hood will dissolve and only the dazzling light of His lotus feet will remain. When the soul and the attention become pure, then a natural connection with the Shabd is established.

But if we try to accomplish this through our own intellect, then our efforts are doomed to failure. There will always be some selfish purpose inherent in our actions. When we assert with our own intellect, then we are always harboring some ulterior motive. In this way, we block the untainted conscious Power within us, and it cannot come to our aid.

Soamiji Maharaj: Catch hold of the Shabd coming from Agam, the unfathomable region, and unite your surat with it. Remain always absorbed in the inner Satsang.

Baba Somanath: Swami Ji says that the stream of Shabd is cascading down from Agam, the unfathomable region. That stream is Self-Existing and beyond the reach of the intellect. Uniting with that stream of Shabd, become the form of Shabd. Whatever thoughts keep coming in the mind — I am listening to the Shabd; this type of sound is coming; I am separate from the sound; now, I should be hearing some different kind of sound — all of these thoughts that go on arising in the mind must be removed. You must become the form of the Shabd itself; then, that Shabd will attract your soul and transport you into the higher regions.

Satsang means “the company of Truth.”  So, when we contact the Shabd within, this is called Satsang; and, that gathering where the Guru gives out the teachings of Truth is called Satsang as well.

Soamiji Maharaj: The surat ascends and, glimpsing through the door in the inner sky,

It has the darshan of the astral realm and the three worlds.

Baba Somanath: When the soul crosses beyond etheric realm (Ākāsh Manḍal), then it has a direct view of the physical, astral and causal planes. The soul sees all that is below the third eye in the material world; it views the astral realm with its heavens, paradises, gods and goddesses, riddhis and siddhis (supernatural powers), all and sundry. And further still, the soul also experiences the Brahmand and in this way, comes to know the three worlds.

Soamiji Maharaj: Becoming absorbed in Brahmand, the soul travels beyond into Par Brahm.

The lotus blooms on the lake of Sunn.

Baba Somanath: Beyond Brahmand lies the realm of Par Brahm. Here you enter into the region called Sunn (Void) or Daswan Dwar (Tenth Door), where the soul bathes in the pool of Mansarovar. This is the region of the six-petalled lotus. It is in the Sunn region that you totally divest yourself of the four bodies: physical, astral, causal and super-causal. Here, the soul emerges in its pristine form and is called a hansa or swan. When all vestiges of the four bodies covering the Soul are washed away, the immaculate hansa flies free. Understand this as the state of Self-Knowledge or Ātma-Gyān; here, you attain complete knowledge and experience of the Soul.

Soamiji Maharaj: All the powers of Kal are defeated when the soul bathes in the Mansarovar.

Baba Somanath: When Dissolution occurs, all the regions up through Trikuti are rolled up. But when you rise above Trikuti and go into the region of Sunn, then you have risen beyond the reach of Kal. In this verse, Swami Ji refers to the “powers of Kal,” meaning Kal’s dominion over time.  The cycles of the sun and moon are under his control. Day and night belong to him. Our life may last a day, a month, a year or a hundred years but in the end, we die — this is all under Kal’s control. What to speak of the physical plane, even in the heavens, the gods and goddesses, dwell there for a fixed span, and then they are destroyed.  And further, when Dissolution or Grand Dissolution occur, one cycle of time ends and another begins. But, once the soul reaches the Mansarovar, then all the powers of Kal — which were in full force below — those powers are all destroyed and the soul emerges in its Self-Existing form. Once the Soul reaches that level, then it is no longer subject to birth and death in the lower three worlds.29

Soamiji Maharaj: Traveling onward, the soul merges into the form of Akshar (Par Brahm),

Leaving this foreign land behind.

Baba Somanath: Then the soul travels upward to the region of Akshar or Par Brahm. Saints refer to the creation up through Onkār (Trikuti) as the region of Kshar (perishable). When you go above Onkār (Trikuti), you enter the region of Par Brahm, where Akshar, the imperishable realm, begins, and all the alien lands, that is, the lower regions of creation, are left behind. For numberless days, the soul was imprisoned in those perishable worlds, but now it becomes detached, merges into Akshar, and travels onward.

Soamiji Maharaj: The purified soul soars skyward; the old palaces are all abandoned.

Baba Somanath: Becoming free from all coverings, the soul now ascends untrammeled. The realms where it has been imprisoned are all left below; that is, once the soul has been purified in Par Brahm, it ascends even higher into the Nī‑Akshar, the Realm of Truth, and becomes absorbed there.

Soamiji Maharaj: Climbing higher and higher, you rise into the realms beyond;

Stage after stage you discover the unique mysteries of Shabd.

Baba Somanath: Shabd reverberates in the realms beyond.  Here, in the material world, the Shabd is at once intermingled with the five elements and also separate from those elements. When you reach the etheric astral world, there also Shabd permeates the whole region and yet remains separate from it. And when you ascend to Brahmand, once again you find that the Shabd is all-pervading and yet it is separate from all. In the region of Brahmand, the Shabd takes becomes the sound of onkār. When you cross over into Par Brahm, it resounds as rārang. But through all its stages, it remains separate and unattached. Shabd is complete in itself, the supporting Power behind all that exists and yet taking support from none. And when the soul rises higher still, it merges into the Sar Shabd, leaving aside all the lower sounds. And finally, taking the support of the True Shabd (Sat Shabd), it reaches the primal home of the soul, Sach Khand.

Soamiji Maharaj: Without the Saint, no one can understand the revelations that unfold as you ascend.

Baba Somanath: When you ascend into the Par Brahm and beyond, your entire experience arises from Shabd and Shabd alone. The vital airs (prāna vāyu) do not reach to that place; the buddhi (intellect) does not function there; the brahmākār vritti, and the knowledge that comes from complete identification with Brahm have been left behind.30 Only the soul who has manifested the higher Shabd and has experienced its secrets within can understand this condition. All the others who have only heard about these inner planes get some conviction about their existence. But they can only imagine with the mind’s eye the nature of the Shabd, the mysteries that lie hidden there, and the joy of the soul that attains that status. They have no actual proof from first-hand experience.

Soamiji: Without the inner experience, we can’t properly describe the inner Shabd. Our descriptions are just a meaningless jumble of words.

Baba Somanath: Until we have the inner experience, we cannot speak of the inner realms with the conviction of Truth. We take some words from here, some from there and put them all together to describe the inner reality. But our words can carry no authority, because they are not backed up by actual experience.

Soamiji Maharaj: Scholars build castles in the air, but without meditation and practical experience, the Light of illumination does not dawn.

Baba Somanath: The difference between the meditator with practical experience and the scholar who just talks is as great as the difference between heaven and earth. If some lowly laborer starts prattling about the grandeur of the royal court, what glory can he shed on its magnificent splendor. The poor fellow has never even seen it. In the same way, the scholars take one thing from this scripture and something else from another scripture. They pore over the Shastras, the Puranas, the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and so on. Pulling together quotes from all the various holy books, they can deliver impressive sermons, explaining the mysteries of spirituality for the benefit of others. They become great orators. But if you glimpse within their hearts, you will find a barren wasteland. They are just playing with words without any idea of what lies behind them. But, in the end, spirituality is a matter of doing, not of talking. Until we have first-hand experience of the within, we are not capable of saying anything about the higher realms.

The scholars who rely on bookish knowledge do not practice the meditation and open the inner eye. And as long as the divine eye (divya chakshu) or eye of knowledge (gyān chakshu) does not open, we are unable to have a peep within. Instead, we collect the words that are spoken by the mahatmas who have experienced the inner worlds and then interpret their words according to our own intellect. We multiply everything ten times, add masala (spice) from here, there, and everywhere, and then give memorable lectures to other people. But nothing is accomplished like this. When your own heart is empty, you have nothing to share with others. It is like a person with tuberculosis trying to train a wrestler: “Now, every day you should drink three or four seers of milk. Then you should apply yourself to a program of vigorous exercise.” That wrestler might well ask: “My friend, what about your own condition?”  And then, that trainer would have to admit: “Truly speaking, I only have about three or four days left to live. Then I will be departing from this world.”

So, this is the condition of those with bookish knowledge only. They have not controlled the mind, and they have not done any meditation, but with great enthusiasm they go on advising others about spirituality. What can be gained from this? Nothing at all. These learned people have no wealth in their wallet to distribute, and their listeners will go away empty-handed.

Soamiji Maharaj: Only a Saint knows the status of the Saints. How could anyone else fathom Their profound depths?

Baba Somanath: Until you experience the Shabd, you can know nothing of it. Therefore, Swami Ji explains to us that a Saint — one who has experienced the Shabd and discovered its secret — can understand the stature and condition of the Saints. This is the hallmark of the Saints — They first see and then say.

Soamiji Maharaj: Give up your conjecture and cleverness; acknowledge the Saint’s words as true.

Baba Somanath: Now it is clear that your intellect must, first and foremost, accept the Guru’s words.  If you want to grasp this subject through your own intellect, you can go on trying for your whole life long, but you will not get a glimmer of understanding.  Instead, believing in the words of the Saints, we should follow Their instructions. And what do they tell us: “If you meditate in this way, you will achieve that exalted status.” Such knowledge is totally inaccessible to the intellect.

But the intellect is such a mighty power that it is not ready to accept anyone else’s understanding. Your intellect will always try to interfere, putting some objection or other before you. And if you are swayed by its arguments, you are only harming yourself; what harm can it do to the Saints?

Soamiji Maharaj: He tells you what He has seen Himself. Why do you listen to His words and then twist them to suit your own limited understanding?

The Saints have seen the truth for Themselves; They have the proof of Their own eyes. And whatever They have experienced, They say only that much. But we people indulge in intellectual wrestling. We think the understanding of our intellect is more important than the words of the Saints. My friend, the intellect is stark blind, so what knowledge can you hope to gain from it?

Soamiji Maharaj: Radhaswami says to one and all: only someone who knows the inner secret can fathom the mystery of the Saints.

Baba Somanath: Now, Swami Ji has told us everything. He has spoken of the secret of the Saints. When the Saints are gracious, They reveal this secret. And those who accept the Saints’ words and apply themselves with firm faith will experience this mystery within themselves.

Komal chitt dayā man dhāro, paramārath kā khoj lagānā

कोमल चित्त दया मन धारो । परमारथ का खोज लगाना ।।१।।
