Mystics have universally taught, East and West, that "the Light of God is within everyone", as George Fox, founder of the Quakers once said. If we can transcend cultural blinders that imply it is impossible for us to see spiritually, mystically or inwardly with the Single Eye, there is indeed hope for us to reunite with the Divine Light, right here, right now, in the present moment, see for ourselves and discover that "darkness is not really dark" (Psalm 139: 12). Once we are open to this possibility, then there is the potential of adopting a contemplative meditation practice that leads to the experience of the Inner Light. There is hope we might be able to temporarily transcend the world of the five senses during our meditations and finally begin our journey exploring the "New World" of Inner Space, the "Kingdom of the Heavens" that are within us, the Kingdom of the Light. "If one is whole, one will be filled with Light, but if one is divided, one will be filled with darkness... there is light within a Person of Light, and it illuminates the entire cosmos." (Gospel of Thomas) "If your Eye be Single, your whole body shall be full of Light." (New Testament) If the energy of our attention is scattered and dissipated into the world of the five senses, when we close our eyes we naturally see darkness, but if our attention or awareness returns to the Single Eye -- Third Eye, the seat of our soul -- Light shall appear. "Do not cease seeking day or night and do not let yourselves relax until you find the Mysteries of the Kingdom of Light, which will purify you and make you into pure Light and lead you into the Kingdom of the Light." With the demiurgical or Kalistic systems of conventional religions there's always a sense of running out the clock, that though life is short we should be spending decades upon decades perfecting rites and rituals, or beginning at the bottom of the chakra system of the physical body and slowly working our way up, or waiting to develop super ethical purity par excellence till we become "worthy" before we can truly begin our spiritual journey. But demiurgical systems put the divine realm into an unattainable future state always out of reach of human beings who live lives here in the present-tense. The clock runs out! Not enough "time". The cosmic conspiracy wins again (Maya/illusion). For the Way of the Mystics however, it is never about "time" (kal) but the attention faculty of the soul, inverting our attention within powered by divine grace. Rather than a never-Kingdom unattainable, for the mystics the divine realm is a now-Kingdom to be accessed in the Living Present Moment!

Astronomy and Mysticism Have Much in Common, by James Bean

The bigness of the “known” cosmos keeps on getting bigger! Actually, it’s our awareness that’s growing, seeing That Which Is. I find astronomy and mysticism have much in common. Like Galileo discovering new worlds through the lens of his telescope, mystics have been trying to tell humanity for eons of something quite similar. The reason why the contemplative state of being is still hidden from most of us is that, unlike Galileo’s telescope, in order to look through this particular lens, the third eye or inner vision, we mustn’t focus on the outward sensory impressions, but go in the opposite direction: into Inner Space. Look through the lens of the third eye to access the world of within. Tune the inner radio dial, listening for the subtle inner sounds coming from beyond the silence. This is how to access the Kingdom of the Heavens, the Inner Space within you. The spiritual path is all about this: transformation. Beyond a certain point, when we’ve gone as far as we can go on our own at trying to figure out the mysteries of reality and the cosmos, inspiration can come from others (we trust). The deluxe version of this mentoring process (for a few of us) comes from living and enlightened spiritual masters.

"When we close our eyes and do not see any objects, this does not mean that there exists nothing that can be seen. In other words, the shapeless darkness is also an object. Unfortunately, we cannot even see pure darkness because we are constantly thinking about the images of the world, and instead of seeing darkness we see the imaginary sights projected on the screen of inner mind. Without practicing the meditation of focusing in the darkness, it is not possible to see the subtle Light that lies deep within. The experience of Divine Light in the meditation brings joy, and the progress then becomes rapid. Consequently, one’s faith and conviction becomes stronger." Kirpal Singh: "The Light within should be penetrated while fixing your gaze intently in its center when it will grow stronger and burst to give you further way up." (Spiritual Elixir)

Kirpal Singh: "As you look within, you will see a sky, or blue sky: If you look minutely into it, you will find it studded with stars, or you may see pinpoints of Light. If so, try to locate the big star out of them, and fix your whole attention on that. Then you may see the inner sun or moon. If so, focus all your attention into the middle; it will break into pieces, and you will cross it. Beyond you will see the radiant form of the Master or his Master." (Spiritual Elixir)

Noticing the Inner Light-Motif

Holidays late in the year in different world religions have the theme of Light: the return of Light, celebration of Light, or various miracles associated with the victory, renewal, rebirth or incarnation of the Light here in the physical plane. For those following the Path of the Masters, it is experiencing the Inner Light in meditation that is the greatest Light and miracle of all and the true spiritual meaning of Divali. Much Light to all. Happy Divali!

True Divali is Inner Light: “Within thine own self, behold the splendor of thy Beloved.” (Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras)

“Look within yourself with the inner eye. The whole expanse inside is replete with the refulgence of the Divine Light.” (Sant Dadu Dayal)

Spiritual Significance of Divali

“While Diwali is popularly known as the "Festival of Lights”, the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is “the awareness of the Inner Light”. Central to Hindu philosophy (primarily the Yoga, Vedanta, and Samkhya schools of Hindu philosophy) is the belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the “victory of good over evil”, refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one’s true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening comes compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings ananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light.

As with the earlier publications, Harmony Of All Religions (Sarvadharma Samanvy), by Beloved Swami Santsevi Ji Maharaj, and Philosophy Of Liberation (Moksha Darshan), by Sant Maharshi Mehi Paramhans, with this new book, The Inward Journey of the Soul by Swami Vyasanand Ji Maharaj, I am learning new things about the teachings of the Sants of India, and am grateful to be able to access this advanced wisdom. It is indeed an impressive book providing much needed depth and detail about Sant Mat principals as well as meditation practice. It makes a huge contribution to understanding this Path more clearly, which is especially necessary for Westerners interested in the Sant tradition, not being fluent in Hindi, to fill in the lacuna or blanks in our understanding. As with the NASA space probes encountering distant worlds -- planets and moons, transforming fuzzy objects into clear view, revealing surface features with sharp resolution, as a result of encountering this book, may spiritual seekers and satsangis around the world come away with a much clearer understanding of the teachings of the Masters.

From the Esoteric Teachings of Satguru Kabir

In the book, Brahm Nirupan, Satguru Kabir explained the inner meaning of spiritual life to Dharam Dass, his foremost disciple. The Brahm Nirupan is a matchless text that discusses the Essence of the Word or Sar Shabda [the Divine Sound Current], also called Ni-akshar or Nir-akshar shabda. This Sar-shabda refers to the Ultimate Reality:

20. Contemplating the Sar Shabd [the Divine Sound], even for half of a moment, confers much more spiritual merit than living in the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi) for millions of years.

28. The knowledge of the Essence of the Word is indeed the meditation of all meditations, and the austerity of all austerities. The keen devotee who obtains this knowledge definitely obtains the rewards of the eternal abode.

89. The Word is the greatest of all, and is the cause of all beings. It is beyond mental perceptions. It shines brighter than millions of suns. It is the essence of all knowledge. You should meditate on the Essence of the Word.

90. With knowledge of the Essence of the Word, the large heap of sins of countless lifetimes will be burnt, just as a huge heap of dry grass burns in the fire.

91. When the wise devotee goes to the refuge of Satguru, and follows his instruction to meditate on the Essence of the Word, and recites the Supreme Name, he becomes so great that the gods -- Brahma, etc. act as his servant.

92. Whoever is bound by various rituals and karmas, will reap the fruits of their actions by being in the bondage of rebirths in this world. The medicine to cure this disease of rebirths and suffering is the Essence of the Word that gives liberation. O Dharam Dass! There is no other remedy.

93. That Essence of the Word is the basic support of everything, but is itself without support. It is formless and is beyond the attributes of Maya. It is all-powerful and is the life force of all living beings in the three worlds. It is even more powerful than the gods. It is realized only with proper meditation.

30. A devotee who controls the mind and practices hearing the Divine Melody, reaches the difficult-to-obtain state of union of the right and left nerve currents in the central channel in meditation. This central is called the Sushumna in Yoga. These three meet at the third eye. In deep silence the devotee sees the intense Eternal Light of Reality.

31. Above the Trikuti (third eye) there are three states of silence -- the beginning, middle and end. These three states of silence merge or dissolve into the Eternal Light. He who does not know the secret of these cannot be said to be a Vaishanava.

32. When consciousness in meditation reaches the thousand-petalled lotus, it then rises to the eighth lotus above. This is called Unmani Chakra. In this state the devotee sees the Divine Light without the presence of a lamp, and hears the Divine Melody without musical instruments.

33. The Sant Mat preached by Sat Guru Kabir explained that the yogi who practices meditation would rise above all of these (the chakras) and, going above the eighth chakra, reaches a region where the lotus has countless petals. The yogi then sees the light of millions of moons and suns, and reaches a state of supreme silence.

34. When the yogi reaches this state of realization, he becomes aware that the Self is free of the support of the body, space, heaven and earth. His consciousness rises above the physical and astral forms, and then even death becomes his servant. This state of consciousness is one of unity with God.
