The Fall and Rise of the Gnostics: Gnostic Gospels Explored - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcasts

The Fall and Rise of the Gnostics: Gnostic Gospels Explored - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcasts

Discover why these Gnostic Gospels and other writings got purged from the Western world during the Fourth Century. Celebrate the sages of Judaism, Neoplatonism and Pythagoreanism that helped to give birth to all of these amazing spiritual movements of antiquity such as the Essenes, Sethians, Mandaeans, Ebionites (mentioned in the Book of Acts, the Hebrew Christians lead by James the Just -- "Christianity before Paul"), Valentinians, Manichaeans, Cathars, and other groups that once represented "cousin" schools of spirituality that have much in common with living paths of today such as Kabbalah, Sufism, and Sant Mat.

Instead of a wafer-thin New Testament at the end of a very long old covenant, how about a huge treasure-trove of New Testament type literature, including poetry, psalms and odes? Some of the twelve surviving codices of the Nag Hammadi or Gnostic Gospels were organized with a curious New Testament-like format of: 1) gospels, followed by, 2) letters or spiritual discourses, and then, 3) books of revelation (heavenly apocalypses). These revelations consist of the visionary or out-of-body encounters by various Saints soul-traveling through several heavenly realms of consciousness. This almost two thousand year old "time capsule", now known as the Nag Hammadi Library, has set in motion a spiritual revolution.

Before the Sufis, in antiquity there were some who were vegetarians, followed a practice of being "initiated into the Mysteries of the Kingdom of the Heavens" by a living teacher, and during their meditation practice repeated several sacred names that correspond to various inner regions. Their goal was to spiritually ascend through several heavenly realms in order to return to the timeless Supreme Being in the highest realm. Some called this Being "The Nameless One". There are references to inner Light and Sound. There are also references to a Kal Niranjan type being, a false god or negative power called "the Demiurge". Several Sant Mat authors have written books about the Gnostics and the parallels between Gnosticism and the Path of the Masters.

One of the Gnostic scriptures called "Pistis Sophia" contains many beautiful hymns and prayers. Though reincarnation is mentioned as a reality, the goal of salvation was to liberate souls from material captivity, reincarnation, the wheel of fate, and go back to God again. Souls were given the ability to mystically travel via the Holy Stream of Light. In Pistis Sophia (the Book of Faith-Wisdom) Christ says, "Seek, all of you, after the Light, so that the power of your soul that is in you may live. Do not cease seeking day or night until you find the mysteries of the Kingdom of Light, which will purify you, make you into pure Light and lead you into the Kingdom of the Light."

Noticing the Inner Light-Motif

There is a very clear Light-motif in the world scriptures, including Western holy books such as the Hebrew Bible, Ethiopian Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls, Zohar, Books of Enoch, New Testament, Nag Hammadi Library, Gnostic Gospels, Pitstis Sophia, Corpus Hermeticum, Mandaean and Manichaean texts, as well as in countless writings of Kabbalah, Syrian, Coptic, Orthodox, Catholic, and other mystics.

Saying of the Resurrected Christ: “Do not cease seeking day or night, and do not let yourselves relax until you have found all the Mysteries of the Kingdom of Light, which will purify you and make you into Pure Light and lead you into the Kingdom of the Light.” (Yeshua, Book of Faith-Wisdom -- Pistis Sophia)

“If thine eye be Single, thy whole body shall be full of Light”. (Yeshua, New Testament)

“If one is whole, one will be filled with Light, but if one is divided, one will be filled with darkness...” (Yeshua, Gospel of Thomas)

“Close your eyes as in sleep, and look sweetly, lovingly, intently into the middle of the darkness lying in front of you. You will see a dark veil. That which sees the dark veil within, without the help of your physical eyes, is the inner eye... As you look within, you will see a sky, or blue sky: If you look minutely into it, you will find it studded with stars, or you may see pinpoints of Light. If so, try to locate the big star out of them, and fix your whole attention on that. Then you may see the inner sun or moon. If so, focus all your attention into the middle; it will break into pieces, and you will cross it. Beyond you will see the radiant form of the Master or his Master.” (Kirpal Singh, from the Introductory Meditation Instructions)

“The Tenth Gate is also known as the Sixth Chakra, the Third Eye, bindu, the Center located between the two eyebrows. This is the gateway through which we leave the gates of the sense organs and enter in the divine realms and finally become established in the soul. We travel back from the Realm of Darkness to the Realm of Light, from the Light to the Divine Sound, and from the Realm of Sound to the Soundless State. This is called turning back to the Source.” (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)

Ingredients of a Living Spiritual Path -- Seven Gnostic-Sant Mat Parallels

Ingredients of a Living Spiritual Path -- Seven Gnostic-Sant Mat Parallels

“Don't be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.” (Rumi)

With a living mystic path, initiation into the Mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven includes inner direct seeing and hearing. If we can't see or hear, how could we possibly begin exploring Inner Space for ourselves? The information written in restaurant menus might be informative and yet can not resolve one's hunger. And tales in sacred texts of people who once enjoyed glorious feasts centuries ago does not feed the living.

"When we see darkness with our eyes closed we are in the realm of death and re-birth [we are unaware of our true nature.]. When we come out of the realm of darkness and enter into the realm of Light, we will at the same time transcend the web of death. It is not possible that we can remain in darkness and be free from the net of birth and death. Having achieved inner Light, we can be liberated from the cycle of birth and death." (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj, Harmony of All Religions)

In the Corpus Hermeticum and Nag Hammadi scriptures are/were described all of the ingredients of a living, viable mystical path: https://medium.com/sant-mat-meditation-and-spirituality/ingredients-of-a-living-spiritual-path-seven-gnostic-sant-mat-parallels-f55cb5715c8e#.r00rrogoe

1) living masters/teachers with students (past masters, scrolls, cuneiform tablets or old scriptures are not enough: a living guide is required);

“Rumi says, ‘If you seek to know God, sit at the feet of the Saints’”.

“People, where are you rushing, so intoxicated and having so fully drunk the strong wine of reasoning unaccompanied by acquaintance? You cannot hold it; already you are about to throw it up. Stop, get sober! Look up with the eyes of the mind [heart or soul] – and if you cannot all do so, at least those of you who can! For the imperfection that comes from unacquaintance is flooding the entire earth, corrupting the soul along with the body that encloses it and preventing it from putting in at the Haven of Safety. So do not be swept away by the main current! Rather, you who can must avail yourselves of a counter-current, take to the Haven of Safety, put in there, and look for a leader to show you the way to the Doors of Gnosis (Acquaintance), where there is bright Light, pure from darkness; where no one is intoxicated, but all are sober, fixing their eyes on that Being who wills to be seen – but mentally [with the eye of the soul], for that Being cannot be heard or told of or seen by eyes, only by the mind’s eye [the eye of the soul].”

(Hermetic Tractate VII, Corpus Hermeticum: The Greatest Human Evil is Unacquaintance With God, Bentley Layton translation)

2) a cosmology of several heavens/inner regions/planes/spheres;

Charts of the Heavens — Inner Regions — Planes — Spheres of Creation According to Sant Mat: https://SantMatRadhasoami.Blogspot.com/2019/01/charts-of-heavens-sant-mat-and-gnostic.html

“Blessed are those chosen and unified. The Realm of the Kingdom is theirs. For out of her you have come, and back to her you are returning.” (Saying 49, Gospel of Thomas, Wisdom of the Twin, Lynn Bauman translation)

Summarizing the Spiritual Message of the Gospel of Thomas, See: https://medium.com/gnostic-studies-living-gnosis-now/summarizing-the-spiritual-message-of-the-gospel-of-thomas-by-james-bean-90862170ac8a#.fzn0buzcv

3) an understanding that souls can access these realms here and now during this present life (a present-tense Kingdom of Heaven available to souls right now, not a spirituality postponed till some magical date on a calendar or hypothesized future age);

"In this life the concept of salvation all describe;

To meet the Lord by dying while living, none discloses.

They all speak of the goal of salvation after death;

How to attain it while living, no one says. Were they to reveal the method of attaining release while living,

Then alone would Tulsi be convinced of their words.

Who speak, after seeing with their own eyes, and teach the method of salvation during life,

Are of the stage and stature of Saints, for they reveal the quintessence of the soul."

("Seek To See God Now -- Liberation During This Life" -- Mystic-Poem of Tulsi Sahib)

4) an initiation into the mysteries of the heavens, imparting to spiritual seekers the meditation techniques and sacred names;

The Master said,
“What your own eyes cannot see,
your human ears do not hear,
your physical hands cannot touch,
and what is inconceivable
to the human mind — that I will give to you!”

(Saying 17, Gospel of Thomas, Wisdom of the Twin, Lynn Bauman translation);

5) visionary and auditory mysticism (inner Light and Sound, spiritual seeing and hearing) -- descriptions of souls traveling within through various inner regions;

“Man’s soul shall become, when it leaveth the body, a great flood of Light, so as to traverse all the regions until it cometh into the Kingdom of Mystery… Seek, all of you, after the Light, so that the power of your soul that is in you may find Life. Do not cease seeking day or night until you find the Mysteries of the Kingdom of Light, which will purify you, transform you into pure Light, and guide you into the Kingdom of the Light.” (Gospel of Faith-Wisdom — Pistis Sophia)

“Look at God within yourself, how ‘God is Light.’ For his Nature is a glorious, many-splendored Light. He manifests the Light of his Nature to those who love Him in all the worlds…” (John of Dalyatha, Syriac Mystic)

"When your eye turns inwards in the brain and you see the firmament within, and your spirit leaves the body and rises upwards, you will see the Akash in which is located Sahas-dal-kanwal, the thousand petals of which perform the various functions pertaining to the three worlds. Its effulgence will exhilarate your spirit." (Soamiji Maharaj, "Esoteric Instructions")

"At first, Mataji pointed out, there will be only darkness but eventually light will appear in the form of either small flashes or small star-like points. In any case, one should focus on the radiance, keeping one’s simran intact and allowing the light to draw the soul inward. The third and most important step, Mataji said, is to listen to the sound that issues forth from the light. It is this internal music which will numb the body and allow the consciousness to leave its ordinary dwelling. By riding this current of light and sound, like a fish going upstream, the soul will be able to go back to its original home. On the journey within, however, the soul must be guided by a true master so as not to be detained in any of the lower illusory regions. According to Mataji, what near-death patients experience is only the beginning of a vast sojourn into great universes of light, love and beauty." -- Yogani Mataji: https://medium.com/sant-mat-meditation-and-spirituality/the-teachings-of-yogani-mataji-radhaswami-satsang-hoshiarpur-71cfc9f63223#.1eq9lmbuw

“…Listen to the Sound that issues forth from the Light.” (Some valuable guidance about correct and proper Surat Shabd Yoga practice made by Yogani Mataji.)

“I am the silence that is incomprehensible.
I am the Voice whose Sound is manifold
and the Word whose appearance is multiple…
I am the hearing which can be attained by everyone.”

(Thunder: Perfect Mind, Nag Hammadi Library)

6) they have an ethical code, and this ethical foundation includes a vegetarian diet, then and now;

"In Sant Mat all Masters have decried killing and meat-eating." (Sant Tulsi Sahib, "Ghat Ramayan")

“As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings, he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.” (Pythagoras)

7) The Goal of the teachings and meditation practice is experiencing direct union with God;

"Within this body breathes the secret essence. Within this body beats the heart of the Vedas.

Within this body shines the entire Universe, so the saints say.

Hermits, ascetics, celibates all are lost seeking Him in endless guises.

Seers and sages perfectly parrot the scriptures and holy books, blinded by knowledge.

Their pilgrimage, and fasting, and striving but delude

Despite their perfect practice, they discover no destination.

Only the Saints who know the body's heart have attained the Ultimate, O Tulsi.

Realize this, and you've found your freedom (while teachers trapped in tradition know only the mirage in the mirror)."

("Within This Body" -- Mystic-Poem of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras)

“The center-most part of your being — THERE is the Supreme Region. It is the sacred temple of the Spirit.” (Miguel Molinos, "The Spiritual Guide")

Gita Krishna Gnostic Jesus Parallels

Gita-Krishna Gnostic Parallels

Sant Mat Mysticism Blog

The following is from the Bhagavad Gita along with some parallel passages I found: quotes from the Gospel of Thomas and other Gnostic scriptures I was reminded of when reading this section of the Gita.

Jai Guru,
James

Bhagavad Gita, from Chapters 7 and 8, along with some Gnostic Quotes

The Great Life

1 Hear now, Arjuna, how thou shalt have the full vision of me, if thy heart is set on me and if, striving for Yoga, I am thy refuge supreme.
2 And I will speak to thee of that wisdom and vision which, when known, there is nothing else for thee to know.
3 Among thousands of men perhaps one strives for perfection; and among thousands of those who strive perhaps one knows me in truth.
4 The visible forms of my nature are eight: earth, water, fire, air, ether; the mind, reason, and the sense of 'I'.
5 But beyond my visible nature is my invisible Spirit. This is the fountain of life whereby this universe has its being.

6 All things have their life in this Life, and I am their beginning and end.

***** Parallel Passages: In the Gospel of Thomas, Saying # 23, Jesus said, "I shall choose you, one from a thousand and two from ten thousand, and they will stand as a single one."

Mandaean scriptures:

I lifted mine eyes to heaven

and my soul waited on the House of Life.

And the Life (God) who heard my cry

sent toward me a deliverer.

Life supported life,

Life found its own.

Its own self did Life find,

and my soul found that for which it had looked.

Renowned is Life and victorious.

In the Name of the Great Life,

Sublime Light be praised. *****

Rest In Me

7 In this whole vast universe there is nothing higher than I. All the worlds have their rest in me. as many pearls upon a string.
__________________________ __________________________________________

***** Parallel Passages: Gospel of Thomas 90: Jesus said, "Come to me, for my yoke is comfortable and my lordship is gentle, and you
will find rest for yourselves." *****

"I AM That I Am"

8 I am the taste of living waters and the light of the sun and the moon. I am 0M, the sacred word of the Vedas. sound in silence. heroism in men.
9 I am the pure fragrance that comes from the earth and the brightness of fire I am. I am the life of all living beings. and the austere life of those who train their souls.
10 And I am from everlasting the seed of eternal life. I am the intelligence of the intelligent. I am the beauty of the beautiful.
11 I am the power of those who are strong, when this power is free from passions and selfish desires. I am desire when this is pure, when this desire is not against righteousness.
12 And know that the three Gunas, the three states of the soul, come from me: peaceful light, restless life, and lifeless darkness. But I am not in them: they are in me.
13 How the whole world is under the delusion of these shadows of the soul, and knows not me though for ever I am!

14 My mysterious cloud of appearance is hard to pass beyond; but those who in truth come to me go beyond the world of shadows........

24 The unwise think that I am that form of my lower nature which is seen by mortal eyes: they know not my higher nature, imperishable and supreme.
__________________________ __________________________________________

***** Parallel Passages: Gospel of Thomas 77: Jesus said, "I am the light that is over all things. I am all: from me all came forth, and to me all attained. Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there." Nag Hammadi, Thunder Perfect Mind:

I am the one who is honored,

and who is praised,

and who is despised scornfully.

I am peace,

and war has come because of me.

And I am an alien and a citizen.

I am the substance

and the one who has no substance.

Those who are without association with me

are ignorant of me,

and those who are in my substance

are the ones who know me.

Those who are close to me

have been ignorant of me,

and those who are far away from me

are the ones who have known me.

On the day when I am close to you,

you are far away from me,

and on the day when I am far away from you,

I am close to you.

The Mystery of the Kingdom

25 For my glory is not seen by all: I am hidden by my veil of mystery; and in its delusion the world knows me not, who was never born and for ever I am.
26 I know all that was and is and is to come, Arjuna; but no one in truth knows me.
__________________________ __________________________________________

***** Parallel Passages: Gospel of Thomas 62: Jesus said, "I disclose my Mysteries to those [who are worthy] of [my] Mysteries." Pistis Sophia: "And may my song of praise, O Light, please thee, like an excellent Mystery which is received into the gates of light, which those who will repent, will recite, and whose light they will purify."

Pistis Sophia: "Seek the light, all of you, so that the power of your souls, which is within you, may live". *****

27 All beings are born in delusion, the delusion of division which comes from desire and hate.
28 But there are men who do what is good, and whose sins have come to an end. They are free from the delusion of division, and they worship me with all their soul.
29 For those who take refuge in me and strive to be free from age and death, they know Brahman, they know Atman, and they know what Karma is.

Chapter Eight

ARJUNA's Questions: The Kingdom of the Light

I Who is Brahman? Who is Atman? And what is Karma, Spirit Supreme? What is the kingdom of the earth? And what is the kingdom of Light?
2 Who offers the sacrifice in the body? How is the offering made? And when the time to go comes, how do those whose soul is in harmony know thee?

KRISHNA Replies

3 Brahman is the Supreme, the Eternal. Atman is his Spirit in man. Karma is the force of creation, where from all things have their life.
4 Matter is the kingdom of the earth, which in time passes away; but the Spirit is the kingdom of Light. In this body I offer sacrifice, and my body is a sacrifice.
5 And he who at the end of his time leaves his body thinking of me, he in truth comes to my being: he in truth comes unto me.
6 For on whomsoever one thinks at the last moment of life, unto him in truth he goes, through sympathy with his nature.
7 Think of me therefore at all times; remember thou me and fight. And with mind and reason on me, thou shalt in truth come to me.
8 For if a man thinks of the Spirit Supreme with a mind that wanders not, because it has been trained in Yoga, he goes to that Spirit of Light.
__________________________ __________________________________________

***** Parallel Passages: Pistis Sophia: "Do not cease seeking day or night, and do not let yourselves relax until you have found all the
Mysteries of the Kingdom of Light, which will purify you and make you into Pure Light and lead you into the Kingdom of Light."

Manda-d-Hiya -- Gnosis of the Great Life (God) -- the great heavenly redeemer in the Mandaean Scriptures says:

From the Place of Light I came forth,

from you, Bright Habitation.

I come to touch hearts,

to measure and try all minds,

to see in whose heart I dwell.

Whoever thinks of me, of him I think;

whoever calls my Name,

his name I will call.

Whosoever prays my prayer from the earth,

his prayer I will offer from the Place of Light.

I came and found the truthful and believing hearts.

When I was not dwelling among them,

yet my Name was on their lips.

I took them and guided them up to the World of Light.

I became the Illuminator of the Worlds of Light.

I became a king to the Nazoreans,

who receive praise and stability through my Name.

And by my Name they ascend to the Place of the Light.

As for the elect righteous who put me on as a garment,

their eyes were filled with Light,

and Manda-d-Hiya [Knowledge of Life]

was established in their hearts.

The Power Between the Eye-brows -- Third Eye -- The Seat of the Soul

9 He who remembers the Poet. the Creator, who rules all
10 things from all time, smaller than the smallest atom, but upholding this vast universe, who shines like the sun beyond darkness, far far beyond human thought; and at the time of his departure is in union of love and the power of Yoga and, with a mind that wanders not, keeps the power of his life between his eye-brows, he goes to that Spirit Supreme, the Supreme Spirit of light.

11 Hear now of that Path which the seers of the Veda call the Eternal, and which is reached by those who, in peace from earthly passions, live a life of holiness and strive for perfection.
12 If when a man leaves his earthly body he is in the silence of Yoga and, closing the doors of the soul, he keeps the mind in his heart, and places in the head the breath of life.

Sound -- The Word

13 And remembering me he utters OM, the eternal WORD of Brahman, he goes to the Path Supreme.
__________________________ __________________________________________

***** Acts of John: "Who else is Christ but the Sound of God?"

Gospel of Thomas 108: Jesus said, "Whoever drinks from my mouth will become like me; I myself shall become that person, and the hidden things will be revealed to him." *****
__________________________ __________________________________________

14 Those who in the devotion of Yoga rest all their soul ever on me, very soon come unto me.
15 And when those great spirits are in me, the Abode of joy supreme, they never return again to this world of human sorrow.
16 For all the worlds pass away, even the world of Brahma. the Creator: they pass away and return. But he who comes unto me goes no more from death to death.

The Day and Night of Brahma

17 They who know that the vast day of Brahma, the god of creation, ever lasts a thousand ages; and that his night lasts also a thousand ages - they know in truth day and night.
__________________________ __________________________________________

***** Parallels: Saint Paul, Second Peter 3: 8: "With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day".*****
__________________________ __________________________________________

18 When that day comes, all the visible creation arises from the Invisible; and all creation disappears into the Invisible when the night of darkness comes.
19 Thus the infinity of beings which live again and again all powerlessly disappear when the night of darkness comes; and they all return again at the rising of the day.
20 But beyond this creation, visible and invisible, there is an Invisible, higher, Eternal; and when all things pass away this remains for ever and ever.
21 This Invisible is called the Everlasting and is the highest End supreme. Those who reach him never return. This is my supreme abode.
22 This Spirit Supreme, Arjuna, is attained by an ever-living love. In him all things have their life, and from him all things have come.
23 Hear now of a time of light when Yogis go to eternal Life; and hear of a time of darkness when they return to death on earth.
24 If they depart in the flame, the light, the day, the bright weeks of the moon and the months of increasing light of the sun, those who know Brahman go unto Brahman.
25 But if they depart in the smoke, the night, the dark weeks of the moon and the months of decreasing days of the sun, they enter the lunar light, and return to the world of death.
__________________________ __________________________________________

***** Parallel Passages: Pistis Sophia: "Then Jesus rose or ascended to the height, giving light exceedingly, with (a) light to which there was no measure". *****
__________________________ __________________________________________

The "Two Paths" or "Two Ways"

26 These are the two paths that are for ever: the path of light and the path of darkness. The one leads to the land of never-returning: the other returns to sorrow.

27 The Yogi who knows these two paths lives nevermore in delusion. Therefore ever and for ever be thou one in Yoga, Arjuna.
28 There is a reward that comes from the Vedas, or from sacrifice, from an austere life or from holy gifts. But a far greater reward is attained by the Yogi who knows the truth of Light and darkness: he attains his Everlasting Home.
__________________________ __________________________________________

***** Parallel Passages: Letter of Barnabas: "There are two Ways of teaching and power, one of Light and one of Darkness". Gospel of Thomas 49: Jesus said, "Congratulations to those who are alone and chosen, for you will find the kingdom. For you have come from it, and you will return there again."
