Sant Kabir lived during the fifteenth century, raised near Banaras by Muslim parents. He was a weaver, a simple and unlettered man, who earned his living at the loom. It is out of the heart of the common life that he sings his rapturous lyrics of Divine love.
“Kabir” is an Islamic name popular in the Muslim world — it’s one of the “Ninety-Nine Names of Allah” found in the Koran, meaning, “The Greatest”.
Today, Kabir has over twenty-five million devotees in various Kabir Panth and Sant lineages, and is loved by Sikhs, Hindus, Jains, Christians, and Muslims alike. Kabir’s hymns are still sung in the satsangs of various paths all over India and around the world.
Everyone’s Universal Saint, Kabir was:
- a Master or Sant Sat Guru of Surat Shabd Yoga, a founding Guru of Sant Mat and Kabir Panths;
- a musician and poet of Nirguna Bhakti (love and devotion for the One Beloved Formless God);
- a great teacher of Eastern Gnosis (Gnosticism or mysticism);
- peace maker between Hindus and Muslims;
- a social reformer in India who denounced the caste system;
- thought of by many in Islam to be a Sufi Master or Murshid;
- believed by Hindus to be one of the greatest poet-mystics and Vaishnava devotees in the history of India;
- considered a Bhagat by the Sikhs — many of his hymns are included in the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scriptures);
- influenced by Goraknath and the Nath Yogis, and the Nath Yogis of northern India were, in turn, influenced by Tantric Buddhism;
- Kabir’s spirituality is a blend of Prem and Bhakti: love and devotion for the Beloved Lord, the One God (Ek Ongkaar), and mystical, soul travel experiences of a visionary and auditory nature (Inner Light and Sound Meditation, Surat Shabd Yoga).

This is one of the most important books of Kabir to have. Kabir 1008 Vani is a very beautiful and impressive book of ethics and wisdom featuring 1008 sayings of Kabir, one of India’s greatest Masters and poet-mystics, who lived in northern India around six hundred years ago. As with Rumi, the Persian Sufi poet, in recent years Kabir has also become increasingly popular in the West. A few decades ago, the only translations of Kabir were, “Songs of Kabir” by Rabindranath Tagore published in 1915, and Robert Bly’s 1971 paraphrase or “versions” of Kabir, which were also based upon Tagore’s translation. These days however, there are literally hundreds of books available in the English language exploring the poetry and teachings of Sri Guru Kabir Sahib. The Saakhis (a term for a certain kind of poetic composition, a couplet giving testimony of eternal truths) are often used in the satsangs (spiritual gatherings in the name of Eternal Truth) of many spiritual paths based in India. It makes a great deal of sense that spiritual teachers would give satsang talks based upon the Saakhis of Kabir, as they are brimming with wisdom about how to integrate spiritual principles into one’s daily life. Kabir was critical of religious hypocrisy, going through the motions of outward rites and rituals without sincerity of heart. His path was that of Bhakti, meaning, love and devotion for the Beloved Supreme Spirit. For Kabir, the true church, mosque, or temple is within the body, within the human heart. The theme of the Saakhis is bringing all levels of our existence, more and more with each passing day, in body, speech, emotions, and thought, into harmony with the soul or spirit inside.

The Path to the Hidden Treasure of Spirituality Within -- Bijak of Guru Kabir, Ramaini # 37:
"The first clever person (non-dualist) is not clever because non-dualism and dualism have relative existence with each other.
The second clever person is preoccupied with the theory of maya (illusion - maya vadi) and is lost in maya.
The third clever person has been eaten by cleverness (ignorance covers the soul).
The fourth clever person took the people with him (the people who believe in different gods -- wandered in many heavens and hells of their own beliefs).
Who will know the fifth clever person? He enjoys the pleasures of the senses and gets lost.
All become puzzled with the sixth clever person who got lost in imagining the mind to be the soul.
O brother! If you know the seventh cleverness show it to me in the Vedas or the behaviour of the people."
Sakhi of Kabir:
"Just as a coded document shows the way to a hidden treasure, just so this bijak shows the way to realize the soul;
It teaches such words to the soul but there is seldom anyone to understand them."
Commentary by Dr. Jagessar Das:
This ramaini is a condensed but critical examination of the theories of the various schools of thought. These are various schools of philosophy and other belief systems which are present in India and in varying forms in all other countries. There are the Dualists and Non-Dualists as described in the previous ramaini. There is the Maya-Vadi school of thought. Kabir does not mention the names of each school but he has given several belief systems to which people adhere and accordingly lead their followers.
The various systems of belief comprise only external, philosophical knowledge. They contain beliefs in various doctrines and dogmas, rituals and ceremonies, theories about heaven and hell, belief in the mind and the soul being the same, belief that pleasure is the highest good in life, etc. None of these belief systems gives one knowledge of God which is an inner, intuitive realization of the Supreme Being as the Eternal Truth, Supreme Consciousness and the only Reality which exists without a cause. This Reality dwells within. The Saints and Satgurus do not pay attention to the wrangling and hair splitting of philosophical thoughts whether practical or theoretical. They dive directly into the Source and experience God for themselves. Thus whatever they say, becomes scripture. They do not teach philosophy, doctrine or dogma but they teach the Reality of God as the Ever-present Master dwelling within. They have no confusion about whether the mind is the soul or whether the body is the soul, or whether pleasure is the highest good in life. They have no confusion about heaven and hell. They have no confusion about maya and Reality. As long as people are preoccupied with these, they will not obtain Self Realization.
Bijak means a coded document which leads to a hidden treasure. In this Bijak Guru Kabir explains the path to that hidden treasure which is within and not visible by the objective senses. He teaches everyone to give up cleverness and argumentation, and to become humble and accept the Divine Lord dwelling within.

"As part of its
festival celebrating the living tradition of song and performance
dedicated to the poet Kabir, UT's Hindi Urdu Flagship hosted a live
musical performance by an acclaimed traditional Kabir folk ensemble
led by Prahlad Singh Tipanya. Tipanya sings and plays the tambura, a
five-stringed plucked and strummed instrument originally from
Rajasthan, and kartal a wood and metal instrument consisting of two
pieces struck together to make a tambourine-like sound, played with
the fingers of the left hand. His younger son, Vijay Tipanya, sings
with him and plays manjira (small cymbals); his older son, Ajay
Tipanya, plays dholak (two-headed drum); his brother, Ambaram
Tipanya, plays manjira, kartal and sometimes harmonium; Devnarayan
Sarolia plays violin."
