Never the Case of There Being Only Just One Master at a Time in Sant Mat

Never the Case of There Being Only Just One Master at a Time in Sant Mat

"It is not necessary that there should be only one Master in the whole world or even in a single country. There have been different Masters in different countries at the same time, and even in the same country. Thus Guru Nanak and Kabir were contemporaries, and so also Dadu and Guru Arjan. But their teaching is the same at all times and in every country." (Huzur Baba Sawan Singh, “Spiritual Gems”, from letter 121)

Love's Colors -- Mystic Verses of Sant Dadu Dayal of Rajasthan

"God belongs to the caste of love,

love is dear to Him.

Love is His body and love alone

is His color.

The lover is converted into the Beloved;

that indeed is called true love.

Of that beloved, God Himself becomes

the lover, O Dadu.

God has become the anguished lover,

and the anguished lover has become God.

Such a deed has the torturous

pang of separation performed, O Dadu.

When the true Lord stands over your head

for protection, no hot wind can affect you.

You live under the shade of His lotus feet;

a great grace has been bestowed upon you, O Dadu.

One sits fearlessly by repeating God’s Name;

Kal can never consume him.

When you ride the elephant, O Dadu,

then dogs bark in vain.

When love and devotion arise,

one is firmly established in blissful meditation."

"Peace of mind is a sign of God's presence." (Sant Tukaram)

Hazur Baba Sawan Singh on Meditation Practice

"The more time you devote to meditation the more distinctly you will hear the Sound Current which makes for peace of mind or, as you put it, helps us in chaining the monkey. I am glad to read that your meditation is improving. For ages the mind has been developing an intense longing for the things of this world which ostensibly satisfy it for some time but cease to do so after a while. The best way to divert the mind from the mundane baubles is to give it a taste of the inner bliss which far transcends any earthly joy. This inner bliss can be attained by going in and listening to the inner Sound constantly or at least for as long as is possible every day. This is how the monkey can be effectively chained.

"I am glad that you consider meditation the most important business in life. You should increase your time for meditation. It should not be for less than two and a half hours at a stretch, whether the mind takes interest in meditation or not. Sometimes the mind avoids it on petty excuses. When it behaves like this it should be punished by increasing the time that day by another half hour. With the increase in time, the concentration will be complete, the attention will go in, and the Sound Current will be your constant companion, giving you joy and peace." (Huzur Baba Sawan Singh, “Spiritual Gems”, letter 31)

The Spiritual Journey According to Sant TukaRama of Maharashtra -- Mystic Verses

The Spiritual Journey According to Sant TukaRama of Maharashtra -- Mystic Verses

Words Are the Only Clothes I Wear

"Words are the only jewels I possess.
Words are the only clothes I wear.
Words are the only food that sustains my life.
Words are the only wealth I distribute among people.
Says Tuka, witness the Word -- He is God.
I worship Him With my words."

-- Sant TukaRama

Tukaram Freed From Karma

"God is now my sanchit, prarabdh and kriyaman karmas;
They are of no consequence to me anymore;
I am freed from the effects of age and death.
In unity as in diversity, the Divine is all pervading.
The omnipresent Lord, O Tuka, is ever at play within me."

-- Sant TukaRama

Contemplating God In Meditation

"We must forget bodily consciousness like a deer which is infatuated by music.
We must look up to God, as the young ones of a tortoise look up to their mother.
As a fountain rises upwards, even so must one's spirit rise to God.
One should entertain no idea whatsoever, except that of God."

-- Sant TukaRama

Chanting God's Name as a Bhakti Practice

Simran: The art of remembering God by repeating his name verbally, or repeating it within as in Manas Jappa: a mental or internal repetition done "with the tongue of thought".

"A single word said with an attentive mind is better than a thousand when the mind is far away." (Evagrius)

The sole way to the realisation of God, according to Tukarama, is the constant repetition of God's name:

"Sit silent," says Tukarama, "compose thy mind and make it pure, and then happiness will know no bounds. God will certainly come and dwell in his heart. This will be the result of thy long effort. Meditate time after time on God's name ...... says Tuka, "that this will surely come to pass, if thou hast one-pointed devotion" (Abg.1132). "The uttering of the name of God is indeed an easy way for reaching Him. One need not go to a distant forest. God will Himself come to the house of a devotee. One should sit at a place, concentrate his mind, invoke God with love, and utter His name time after time. I swear by God's name," says Tuka, "that there is no other way for reaching God: indeed, this is the easiest of all ways" (Abg. 1698). "If we only utter the name of God, God will stand before us. In that way should we meditate on Him." (Abg. 2021). There are always difficulties which intervene before God is reached. These are dispelled by the power of devotion. "The Name will lead to God if no obstacle intervenes. A fruit becomes ripe on a tree only if it is not plucked" (Abg. 695). "The ship of God's name," says Tuka, "will ultimately carry one across the ocean of life. It will save both the young and the old" (Abg. 2457). "The whole body feels cool when one meditates on the Name. The senses forget their movements. . . . By the sweet nectar-like love of God, one is full of energy and all kinds of sorrow depart immediately" (Abg. 1543).

-- Tukaram, edited by R.D. Ranade, SUNY Press, NY

Repeat the Name of God

"He who utters the Name of God while walking,
gets the merit of a sacrifice at every step.
Blessed is his body. It is itself a place of
pilgrimage. He who says 'God' while doing his
work, is always merged in samadhi.
He who utters the Name of God
while eating, gets the merit of a fast
even though he may have taken his meals.
He who utters the Name of God without
intermission receives liberation while living
[jiva mukti, liberation of the soul].

"Can one be entangled in the mire of
Illusion
When the Name of the Lord is constantly
on his lips?
One who ceaselessly meditates on Him,
While walking, talking, eating or sleeping,
While engaged in worldly duties,
The Lord is with him at all times.

"Repeat constantly the Name of the Lord,
And know that devotion is indispensable
for deliverance.
Thus the devotee becomes the Lord
Himself,
And thus has the Lord become Tuka."

(gatha 4161)

Third Eye -- Inner Visions of Light

"The soul has been cast in the human body,
It reveals itself as the light of the eye.

To realize the Lord,
Saints and Masters denote landmarks;
Whoever turns attention inward,
Captures these inner signs.

He perceives the vast Parbrahm,
Intensely hard to cross.

I shut off outer communication,
And still myself at the eye center;
I gaze at the inner sky, O Tuka, and lo!
The Supreme Spirit comes to dwell within."

Inner Sound and Light

"Tuka is absorbed in the surging wave
of Sound Divine;
Its resplendence spreads through his
innermost being.
The Lord has made His home in me,
The lamp of eternal Light has been
kindled.
The all-pervading Sound, O Tuka, is
the Lord Himself."
(chhandbadh gatha)

"In contemplation of the Lord,
My body and mind are transformed;
What can I now say, what can
I convey?
For the 'I' that was, has become
the Lord Himself.
My soul and the Lord are united;
The creation has become the Lord
Himself.
Tuka has nothing more to add; in
Divine bliss,
His soul has embraced the Lord."

(gatha 4077)

Sant Mat Quote of the Day: August 23rd

Sant Mat Quote of the Day: August 23rd

"Unfortunate events, though potentially a source of anger and despair, have equal potential to be a source of spiritual growth." (Dalai Lama)

"Sant Mat is a pure spiritual tradition. The teachings of Santmat integrate Devotion [Bhakti] of God with inner Subtle Knowledge [Gnosis] and Yoga disciplines. It has been spoken about by many Saints." (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)

Guru Nanak says the True Guru unites us with God, gives us a Godward Focus: "That preceptor is worthy who unites the aspirant with God."

Sant Namdev: "You have blessed me with Your overflowing love within." (The Shri Namdev Gatha)

"Such is the nature of devotion [bhakti], O brother, when devotion appears, then vanity disappears. True devotion is far from thee, sayeth Ravidas. It is the highly fortunate ones who attain it. Give up egotism, efface the distinction of 'mine' and 'thine', and be humble and discriminating like a little ant. Then alone shalt thou be able to pick up and eat the sweet grains of sugar (spirituality) out of the dirt of the world." (Vani of Sant Ravidas)

Sant Ravidas: "So long as inner experiences are not realized, learning and reasoning are of no avail. Learn the letter of wisdom under the discipline of the Satguru, then enter into the meditation of Sahaj." YouTube: Hymn of Sant Ravidas:

"This is a boundless hemisphere, unfathomable and endless. Rarely, through proper technique, can someone cross it. It is known only to the connoisseur Satguru, and to those to whom he reveals it. Gems, diamonds and all the Light are shown by him close by. It is only an intoxicated devotee, a lover of the Saint, who will practice such a discipline of the Sound Current, says Dariya." (Shabd of Sant Dariya Sahib of Bihar)

"Only the connoisseur, who will test the Shabda, and listen to the Teachings with full attention, and within whom these Teachings will dwell, only he will understand this. He within whom the Sun of Knowledge will manifest and remove the darkness of attachment -- only he will understand this. I am telling you this Anurag Sagar (Ocean of Love) -- only rare saints will understand." (Anurag Sagar of Dharamdas)

Simran: "He who utters the Name of God while walking, gets the merit of a sacrifice at every step. Blessed is his body. It is itself a place of pilgrimage. He who utters the Name of God without ceasing receives liberation while living." (Sant Tukarama, "Mysticism In India", by R.D. Ranade, SUNY Press)

"Carry on the repetition [simran] of the true names, taking it to be your very life-breath." (Sant Dariya Sahib)

"Meditation will remove all your burdens; meditation upon Ram's [God's] name will become your support." (Guru Kabir)

"I wish you all health and happiness, but keep uppermost in your mind Bhajan, Dhyan, and devotion to the Supreme Being. The Grace of God on you is the same, as it was before. Attune yourself to the Will of the Lord. Renouncing all thoughts of the past and future, keep your spirit immersed in Shabd at the time of Bhajan." (from a Letter of Soami Ji Maharaj)

"In all higher regions, Heaven's Music is the spiritual food." ("The Way Out is IN", by Swami Ram Bihari Lal)

Always, always meditate day and night - Kabir, Tukarama

Mystic-Poetry of the Sants of India: Tukarama and Kabir: Always, always meditate day and night

The Sant Mat Blog: Inner Light and Sound:

http://santmat.gaia.com/blog

Tukarama: Invoke God With Love, and Utter His Name Time After Time

When I utter Thy name,
my mind becomes composed.
The tongue enjoys
a stream of ambrosia.
Good omens of all kinds take place.
The mind is colored in Thy vision,
and becomes steady on Thy feet.
One becomes satisfied.........
Desires come to an end........
Happiness meets happiness,
and there is no limit
to blessedness.

The whole body
feels cool
when one meditates
on the Name.
The senses forget their
movements. . . . . .
By the sweet nectar-like love
of God, one is
full of energy and
all kinds of sorrow depart it immediately.

The body which was hitherto unclean,
becomes lustrous by the power of
the Name, the mind is purified,
and repentance puts a stop to one's
accumulated Karma.

The evil passions are conquered;
all the impulses are nipped in the bud
by the power of the Name.

One should sit at a place,
concentrate his mind,
invoke God
with love,
and utter His name
time after time.
I swear by God's name,
says Tuka,
that there is no other way
of reaching God:
indeed, this is the easiest
of all ways.

(Mysticism In India -- The Poet-Saints of Maharashtra, R.D. Ranade,
SUNY Press, NY)

Kabir: Your Heavy Load is Taken Off --
Meditation Will Remove All Your Burdens

Meditation leads to salvation's door:
Go to heaven --
why go back to the world?
In the house of the fearless One,
where music, unstruck, sounds,
you shall play trumpets.

Meditate upon Him in your heart.
Without meditation there is no salvation. (Rest)

Unfettered meditation brings salvation:
Your heavy load is taken off.
Welcome Him in your heart,
so you will not be born
again and again.

Blissful meditation
will light a lamp inside you
that does not need any oil.
This lamp will make you immortal;
this lamp will draw out the poison
of lust and anger.

Pierce this meditation
that gives you salvation,
and wear it around your neck.
Never take it off.
Meditate always:
Your guru's grace will get you across.

Meditation will free you
from dependence on others:
You will sleep on silken sheets at home.
Your heart will be at peace;
your life will blossom:
Deeply drink this meditation.

This meditation
will erase your blemishes;
you will be free from Maya's touch.
Meditate, meditate, and sing,
"Hari, Hari" [God, God]. You will obtain
this meditation from your true guru [Satguru].

Always, always meditate day and night:
When you rise, when you lie down,
when you breathe in, when you breathe out.
Waking or sleeping,
relish the taste of meditation --
meditation will bring union.

Meditation will remove all your burdens;
meditation upon Ram's name
will become your support.
Kabir, says, "He is limitless."
