Saawan* is the Month of Love, of Longing for the Beloved

Following is the complete translation of this Shabd of Virah (a song sung when the lover suffers from the agony of separation from his sweetest Beloved) by the Tulsi Saheb Hathraswale. Translation into English by Shweta Sharma.

“Saawan* is the month of love, of longing for the Beloved and as the drops of rain touch the earth, the soul thirsts more and more for union with the Beloved, the Guru.

“Tulsi weeps “Saawan without my piya (the Beloved, the husband) is nothing, the pangs of separation rise like waves in the ocean do, in the inmost core of my heart. Uttering and hearing words do not entertain me or suit my mood, my body and mind are convulsing with immeasurable pain.

“The sorrow caused by the absence of my Beloved husband is so intense that it makes me wander like a mad woman. My heart seethes with anguish, this separation torments me like a thorn that pricks the skin. In this severance from the Beloved Guru, all the money and wealth of this world has become to me like the dust of this earth.

“Dark clouds laden with moisture have now become my enemies as they roar and whirl. I feel the twinge of the aching cry of the peacock and with this, the rumbling and twirling of the clouds fills my inner being and I become one with the turbulence of the skies. My soul begins to whirl and swing between the chakras (the doorsteps of these stations within) and I lose all awareness of the world outside.

“If my Beloved comes along with me, I would undertake this journey within the realms of my inner being day and night. Surat (the soul that is a drop from the Ocean of the Supreme Being) is the current that moves up when it engrosses itself in the Divine Shabd and Nirat (the current that detaches the Surat from the Shabd so that the journey of soul does not get hampered by getting stuck at one region of higher bliss).

“Tulsi makes a string of Surat and Nirat and ties this string with a pole that he makes of his mann (mind) and intellect. He merges with the rhythmic waves of the Divine Word that he encounters higher up and the surat rises swinging with these waves.

“This rainy season, Tulsi says, get active in pursuit of true satsang (‘sat’ — truth and ‘sang’ — company: company of the true Guru, the Beloved, the husband). Only those who cross the third til climb up and down this thread of Surat and Nirat and realize the path of Truth.”

Here Comes the Suratia -- the Soul

Here Comes the Suratia -- the Soul

Here comes the Suratia [the Soul] full of yearning and pining.

Nowhere in the world, has she found peace. She
remained roasted in the fire of pain, pleasure
and doubts.

Nowhere could she get the secrets and whereabouts
of Sat Pad (the True Eternal Region) though she made
a thorough search in all extant religions.

Seeking and searching, she fortunately came in
contact with the Sat Guru. She adopted His Saran*
on listening to His discourses.

Guru very mercifully explained to her the easy
modes and methods of Surat Shabd Yoga. The
dried up branches of her mind-tree now again
became green.

Love is the Force of Attraction That Sustains the Universe

Love is the Force of Attraction That Sustains the Universe

Lotus_Of_Particles

81. Love or affection is but another name of the Force of Attraction (i.e. Quvvat-i-jaziba). It is on account of this force that the entire universe, which has come into existence through the combination of small particles and atoms, is being maintained. And it is also on account of this force that all bodies or forms are being maintained. If there be no love, no one would care to meet anybody, nor would anyone do any work attentively.

82. When it is established that the whole creation is functioning through love, or rather the whole creation is being maintained and sustained by love, then how can Parmarth ([spirituality] the supreme object), i.e., the union of the Spirit (the Surat or Soul, which is a particle of the Ocean or Reservoir) with Shabd (the Divine Ocean or Reservoir) be achieved without love? How can these two (i.e., the Surat and Shabd) unite?

83. The Supreme Being Radhasoami Dayal [Merciful Lord of the Soul] is, the Ocean or Reservoir of Love, and Surat [the Soul], which is His particle, i.e., emanation or current, is also of the essence of love. Therefore, unless love is engendered in the Surat [the attention-faculty of the Soul], it cannot merge into its Reservoir. In other words, the practice of traversing on this path and reaching the Source (which is known as the practice of Surat and Shabd [yoga or meditation]) could never be performed properly or correctly carried on.

Open a Window to God -- Rumi

Open A Window To God -- Rumi

"If this screen - which is you - is struck from before your eyes, the Beloved will find the Beloved, and you will be entirely lost. Then you will hear with the Ear of your Heart. That Mystery, so long concealed is at last opened, the darkness of your night at last bathed in dawn!" (Fakhruddin 'Iraqi, Divine Flashes, Paulist Press, a volume in the Classics of Western Spirituality Series)

Rumi put it this way, "Listen, open a window to God and begin to delight yourself by gazing upon Him through the opening. The business of love is to make the window of the heart, for the breast is illumined by the beauty of the Beloved. Gaze incessantly on the face of your Beloved! Listen, this is in your power my friend!"

Within our grasp is the ability to regain the Vision of our soul and the Communion with our Beloved Allah; both reside together in the mystical garden, the paradise of the spiritual world. Though the material sphere acts as a dense layer of overcast skies obscuring our vision of what lies beyond, Masters have revealed the Secrets of obtaining paradise to anyone who yearns to discover them saying to their students very much like Rumi did, "This is in your power my friend!"

The process of gaining a vision of paradise and mystic transport has been described as "stripping off old garments" and replacing them with a new heavenly robe made of Light. In his Persian Sufi classic, Divine Flashes, Fakhruddin 'Iraqi describes the process.

"When the Beloved would exalt the lover, He strips from him the garments collected from all the worlds, and clothes him in the robe of His own attributes. Then the Beloved calls him by all his own attributes. Then the Beloved calls him by all his own names, and seats him in his own place. When the lover studies his new clothes he finds himself arrayed in different colors, and will wonder 'what is this beautiful tint, this garment so unique?'"

This quote from Divine Flashes reminds me of Saying 37 in the Gospel of Thomas, one of the earliest collections of the sayings of Jesus.

His disciples said, "When will you appear to us, and when will we see you?" Jesus said, "When you strip without being ashamed, and you will take your cloths and put them under your feet like little children and trample them, then you will see the Son of the Living One and you will not be afraid." (The Complete Gospels, Robert J. Miller, Polebridge Press)

Sufism is a form of Islamic Gnosticism which really does have many affinities with earlier Gnostic mystical traditions of the middle east. Like other movements of the past that embrace spiritual experience and mystic transport through the Seven Heavens, Sufis have found it useful to compare out-of-body or ascension journeys to the stripping or shedding of garments. The above quote illustrates their view that each soul on the earth-plane is wearing several garments. We are souls wearing subtle bodies or coverings; our physical body is made out of the material substance of the physical universe. We are, as the late Dr. Carl Sagan put it, "star stuff pondering star stuff." Our bodies are made out of atoms that once came from stars and other objects in the cosmos. When we enter into contemplation and mystical states, our awareness is elsewhere; we become "dead to the world," have risen above body-consciousness.

In that sense, we have, for the duration of our meditation period, "stripped" ourselves of the garment of the body for the purpose of exploring other levels of our existence. The mystic traveler enters into what has been called "the fourth state of consciousness." In addition to the waking state, the dream state, the unconsciousness state of deep sleep, the truly holistic explorer can also integrate into his or her experience the spiritual worlds.

Mysticism teaches that there are many layers of reality, that there are other garments that will eventually be shed during journeys of ascension. These garments or subtle bodies have been given names in Hebrew, Greek, Coptic, Syriac, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, and other languages. In addition to the "garment" of the physical body, each soul is wearing several other garments or bodies, other sheaths that surround the soul, allowing the soul to connect to the various regions of creation. Counting the physical plane as Level One, Level Two is called by many "the astral plane," made of astral stuff -- astral substance, existing at a slightly higher vibration in the astral region. Level Three is the causal body, made of causal or akashic substance, inhabiting the causal plane. Level Four is the mental body made of mind substance, and is part of the mental plane. The etheric body (Level Five) allows the soul to access that region. Above these worlds of mind and matter, the soul resides in the Timeless Spiritual Realm of Truth (Haq). Metaphysically speaking, we're already in heaven, we just don't know it! 'Iraqi says:

"By day I praised you but never knew it; by night slept with you without realizing; fancying myself to be myself; but no, I was you and never knew it!"

Luckily for us slumbering souls, there are always a few Moses-types in the world freeing those yearning for a real promised land, an occasional Rumi or Shams, here or there, sharing their Secrets about the soul.

"With every breath the Sound of Love surrounds us, and we are bound for the depths of space, without distraction. Out beyond duality, we have a Home, and it is Majesty. That pure substance is different from this dusty world. We once came down; soon we'll return." (Rumi)

Journey of the Soul

Journey of the Soul

"O traveler! Seek the path that lies within you. You and your Beloved are in the same body. Your Beloved is pervading everywhere, but not being perceived. Those initiated by Guru are able to recognize Him within their bodies. O traveler! If you wish to go alone on the path of the Lord, look for the path within and do not delay. The four spheres of darkness, Light, Sound and Soundlessness [Anadi, Anami] -- they all lie within the temple of your body." (Padavali of Maharshi Mehi)

Without the Beloved I Am Nothing

Without the Beloved
I Am Nothing

"No matter how sweetly one talks, how elaborately one explains, how expertly one gives interpretation of the Vedas [scriptures], if that truth is unknown, salvation is not possible. The Vedas speak of the inner world which can not be perceived by mind, intellect and sense organs." (Adi Shankaracharya)

No amount of telling beads of a rosary, recitation of hymns in ambrosial hours, acts of charity, rites and rituals, etc.... can help us see God. Only the shelter of a perfect spiritual master can make it possible for us to see God.

God is not a matter of assumption but a subject of actual perception and realization. He can be seen with the Divine Eye.

"If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is: Infinite." (William Blake)

"This world is an illusion -- practice meditation." (Baba Devi Sahab)

"The love of Maya is sweet to the world, but in the end, this delusion is dispelled." (Guru Nanak)

"Where there is blind belief,
There the Truth is not verified.
Only he will know the Truth, O Ravidas,
Who has the inner experience."
-- Sant Ravidas

Not just any mystical light and sound. Sant Mat is a God-based path with a foundation of Prem Bhakti: love and devotion for the Supreme Being. Without God-Bhakti being central, a spiritual practice would be limited to lower regions of Kal. Genuine Sant Mat is about reuniting with God.

"You faltered through a million lives before you found this human form. Do not waste it this time - devote every moment to remembering God." (Swami Ji Maharaj)

"So perform devotional worship, link your consciousness to the Lord, and dispel anxiety from your mind." (Guru Nanak)

All sadness and woe turns to happiness and deep eloquence in the company of the Beloved.

"The miseries of the world
Flee away from the one
Who carries on repetition
of the True Name,
Fixing attention within, O Ravidas."

"My (inner) tongue is constantly preoccupied with repeating God's Name, and my hands are constantly engaged in doing my work. Thus have I become carefree. God will take care of me, says Ravidas."

"He who remembers God's Name,
Having sought the company of a Saint;
His miseries are averted,
Thus does Ravidas proclaim." (Sant Ravidas)

"Meditation will remove all your burdens; meditation upon Ram's [God's] name will become your support." (Kabir)

"So long as love is not obtained, fondness for the Beloved cannot arise. When nectar-like true love takes abode within oneself, only then can one contact the loving Sound." (Sant Dariya Sahib of Bihar)

Param Sant Tulsi Sahab of Hathras, India is the Adi Guru, the grandfather or founding-father of modern-day Sant Mat, the Inner Light and Sound movement.

Param Sant Tulsi Sahib is the connecting link between the classic Sants of India, including in the Kabir lineage, and contemporary Sant Mat.

Any serious study of Sant Mat teachings must include the hymns and spiritual discourses of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras.

The term "Sant Mat" was coined by Sant Tulsi Sahib during the 19th Century.

Mystic Verses of Tulsi Sahib: Reaching the Beloved Lord of Love

"Very exalted is the status of the Sat Guru and very sublime is his religion. He has revealed the Inaccessible Region. Surat [the attention of the soul] ascends to the gateway of Sat Lok [True Eternal Realm], and witnesses a spectacle which is beyond the reach and comprehension of ascetics. Every day she [the soul] visits the region of Shyam Set, i.e. the Third Til [Third Eye]. She sees the path in the company of her friends (the senses of perception) and, ascending above, gets a close view of the region. She is dazed on seeing the refulgence of the Beloved. Her attention remains riveted on Him, and she is oblivious of her body and mind. All the barriers on the way to the Beloved are removed. She quickly ascends one mansion after another. She rids herself of all her troubles by being baptized at the Ghat [bathing place] of Triveni [confluence of the three sacred rivers]. Says Tulsi, from the time she became acquainted with the Beloved she, enjoying the bliss of mansions after mansions, reaches the Beloved Lord."
