Meet a #Vegan #Rumi, the Sufi Poet-Mystic, by James Bean

Meet a #Vegan #Rumi, the Sufi Poet-Mystic, by James Bean

Meat consumption (carnism), being part of an oppressive system of denial and cruelty, in the area of mainstream institutional religions relies heavily on ignorance, outdated Sunday school notions and avoidance of lesser-known sacred texts to maintain the illusion of meat-eating Messiahs, Buddhas and spiritual Masters.

We see this all the time. With Christianity for instance, so many are biblical mythicists and skeptical textual critics of the New Testament cept when it comes to dem loaves with fishes! A couple of references to loaves and fishes with the young disciples of Jesus are elevated into some imagined everlasting Apostolic Fish Company of Galilee whilst ignoring most of the Gospels and literature of the Hebrew Christians (Ebionites) about the various apostles -- who they became -- and the diet they came to follow as part of the ethics of the spiritual path they adopted.

An assumption of Rumi and other major Sufi poets being halal has also been used to provide cover for carnism. The notion put forth goes something like this: "If Rumi was an advanced mystic or Master and he ate meat, then what's the big deal then?" But what if the assumption that Sufi poets like Rumi must have followed a halal diet is another one of those carnistic false assumptions promoted by later pro-halal religious sects in the same way pro-meat Roman Christianity had it's fish symbol, canonized gospels popular with the school of the Apostle Paul while marginalizing the other apostles and banning Ebionite gospels, labeling them as "heretical"? (*1)

See my article: Evidence That Jesus and The Original Aramaic Christians Were Vegetarians: “James was a vegetarian….” (Robert Eisenman, James the Brother of Jesus) “James, the brother of the Lord, lived on seeds and plants and touched neither meat nor wine.” (Epistulae ad Faustum XXII, 3) “John never ate meat.” (Church historian Hegesippus according to Eusebius, History of the Church II 2:3) “The Apostle Matthew partook of seeds, and nuts, hard-shelled fruits, and vegetables, without flesh.” (Clement of Alexandria, The Instructor, Book 2, Chapter 1) Peter said, “I live on olives and bread, to which I rarely only add vegetables.” (Clementine Homilies 12,6; also see, Recognitions 7,6): https://medium.com/sant-mat-meditation-and-spirituality/b8784ac42506

There Have Been Many Pro-Veg Spiritual Movements in Mesopotamia and Persia Including Sufis

The following is excerpted from a New Delhi Times article on the vegetarianism of Rumi -- actually vegan -- as you'll see from the passages they quote from Rumi ("shunned even milk and milk products").

"At the age of 12, Rumi, born in a Muslim meat-eating world, wrote this quatrain and became a vegetarian till he died.

"‘Shadeed-az-kwa nee ast munazin/Ya rafeer ul-qist amnazeer/Choon ke ast shadaaz raftam ke azdaan/Wahen ul-khirama, za dizt’un bu’azir’? (I have existence and I value it so much/So have all the beings on earth and they too, try to preserve it/Then, how can I kill even the tiniest creature/Just to satiate my palate?).'

"Rumi believed that all lives were sacred: 'Taa’shif nifaak b’astz sang (Even a seemingly lifeless stone has a degree of consciousness; respect it).' Rumi was a staunch vegetarian and shunned even milk and milk products ('Sheer mun-haraam nuzt: To me, even milk is forbidden'). He even refrained from sacrificing animals as an Islamic ritual on Eid-Al-Adah (Bakrid).

"Rumi says in Turkish, ‘Ye’k dez charinda-ul-insaan rish’h’aaz (Look at all animals as you look at humans'). This is of paramount importance. This creates sensitivity that further blossoms into universal empathy. The sanctity of every life is to be saved and preserved: ‘Kahin nish shudam el-fazeer-un-nisaar.’

"Rumi  writes that what we eat, directly influences our thinking. If we consume an animal, its blood and gore will make us act like a slaughterer: ‘Un qasaab, gosht-e-zakaaf’. (*2)

“'We began as mineral. We emerged into plant life, and into the animal state, and then into being human, and always we have forgotten our former states, except in early Spring when we slightly recall being green again'” -- Rumi, Selected Poems, Penguin UK

"When Rumi died his body was interred and a shrine, the Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb), was erected over his place of burial. His epitaph reads:

"'When we are dead, seek not our tomb in the earth, but find it in the hearts of men.'" (*3)

*Notes:

(*1) The orthodox religions of the world have always had a great way to rig the curriculum and manipulate history (practice revisionist history). They suppress the evidence, ban/burn books and even whole libraries (Ebionite gospels, vegetarian verses, gnostic mystical texts, etc...) and then they shout: "Hey! Where's the evidence?"

(*2) When I saw those veg Rumi verses, I thought, at last! This is going to become a blog, and this is going to become a podcast.

(*3) Are there Sufi Orders following the halal diet these days? Yes. Most of them are halal except for the Bawa Muhaiyaddeen group. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen taught vegetarianism. There likely must be a few other veg Sufi Orders too, but probably only a small number of them. Rumi was veg, and the Sufi Order he founded might have began that way, but as we've seen with other religious movements of the past, gradually over time as the masses join a group swelling it's ranks, the dietary customs they bring with them will take over and dominate, in this case the halal diet of the Muslim majority.

Fakhruddin 'Iraqi's Divine Flashes - One of the Greatest of Sufi Spiritual Classics:

Me and Rumi - The Autobiography of Shams-i Tabrizi: "Me and Rumi represents a true milestone in the study of this enigmatic figure. It makes available for the first time in any European language first-hand accounts of Shams that have never been studied by Western scholars."

Shams: Enlightened by the Sun: "This work serves as a reference book for topics of interest on Revered Shams al-Tabriz, compiling the papers presented at the 2009 'Enlightened by the Sun: International Shams al-Tabriz Symposium. The participants of the symposium included valuable academicians and researchers from around the globe..."

Dara Shikoh

This is fascinating to know that shabd yoga was widely known in Agra two centuries before Shiv Dayal Singh, since Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Shah Jahan (who built the Taj Mahal) was an avid practitioner of listening to the inner sound and wrote a very fine treatise on the subject, as he was initiated into the practice by Mullah Shah in Srinagar. Sant Mat Satsang Podcasts, Spiritual Awakening Radio

Sant Mat Satsang Podcasts, Spiritual Awakening Radio

Fund-raising Campaign

Today is Giving Tuesday, kicking off the charitable season with a celebration of giving and philanthropy.

Dear Spiritual Awakening Radio Listeners Around the World:

On behalf of Spiritual Awakening Radio -- these Sant Mat Satsang Podcasts exploring the Path of the Masters, I want to wish you all the very best for the upcoming Christmas and holiday season and for the New Year 2019. May it be a year full of health, happiness, peace, deeper mediations and progress on all fronts. I also wish for 2019 to not only keep on going... but growing, for it to be a year of expansion of this mission, reaching more people in more podcast venues, in more places, presenting more research into this rare Path of the Masters, placing yet more out-of-print books online; another year of sharing material in English that has up-to-now only been accessible in Hindi, or known only to a small number of people, uploading more spiritual classics of the Saints, Gnostics, Sufis, and other Mystics, making them available to everyone for free, giving them a permanent home on the web... exploring all aspects of the Path: teachings, meditation practice, practical guidance about this Path, and ahimsa ethics (including in the area of diet, as in vegetarian and vegan) -- education for a more peaceful planet.

In this realm maya (illusion) seems to be quite successful at occupying minds with infinite kinds of distractions. As Kabir has said:

"Delusion fills the three worlds,
delusion everywhere.
Kabir says (and he’s thought about it),
you live in Delusion Village.
They don’t listen to wise words
and won’t think for themselves.
Kabir continues to scream.
The world goes by like a dream.”

"Blessed are the souls who in today's materialistic world have an inclination towards spirituality." (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)

"Whatever actions bring you closer to God, they are good actions. Whatever actions take you away from God, they are bad actions." (Kirpal Singh)

"Dear Aspirants! Each day strive to do both kinds of satsang: inner and outer. Outer satsang is listening to the teachings of great saints and studying the sacred texts. Inner satsang is the practice of one-pointed meditation." (Maharishi Mehi Paramhans)

"Just as a coded document shows the way to a hidden treasure, just so this Bijak shows the way to realize the soul. It teaches such instructive words to the soul, but there is seldom anyone to understand them." (Bijak of Kabir)

"Only the connoisseur, who will test the Shabda [word], and listen to the teachings with full attention, and within whom these teachings will dwell, only he will understand this." (Anurag Sagar)

"O my friend, I speak nothing
from myself; I only utter what
the Beloved puts into my mouth."
(Guru Nanak)

Donations support the ongoing efforts to create new radio programs and podcasts, progress at the Sant Mat e-Library and other educational activities online including in the world of social media.

I also want to thank those of you who have so generously supported/donated during this and previous years. Simply put, Spiritual Awakening Radio owes its existence and success to all of you, the listeners. The future of this most unusual endeavour is largely in your hands.

If you have questions relating your support, please contact me at this email address: James@SpiritualAwakeningRadio.com .

DONATE: Contributions to Spiritual Awakening Radio should be made through Pay Pal.  There is a Secure Yellow Donate Button on most every page of the Radio Website — GO TO: http://www.SpiritualAwakeningRadio.com/announce.html

Your help is greatly appreciated and needed for 2019 and beyond.

Prayers from the Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry of Soamiji Maharaj, Prayer One

Prayers from the Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry of Soamiji Maharaj, Prayer One

O Radhasoami! I beseech Thee with folded hands to hear my prayer.

(1)

Thou art Sat Purush and Sat Guru, the Munificent Lord. Thou art the parent of all the Jivas [Souls].

 (2)

Be gracious enough to make me Thy own, and extricate me from the snares of Kal [negative power].

 (3)

Sat Yuga, Treta Yuga and Dwapar Yuga have all passed. None knew about the path of Shabd.

 (4)

In Kali Yuga, the Soami (Lord) has taken pity on Jivas, and has openly given out the secrets of Shabd.

 (5)

He has incarnated Himself here for effecting liberation of Jivas. He takes them across the ocean of worldly existence.

 (6)

Releasing me from the thraldom of the three worlds, He has granted me abode in the fourth Pad (beyond Pind, And, and Brahmand). Now I realize the status of Sat Nam and Sat Guru.

 (7)

The first stage is illumined by the Jyoti (flame). The second stage is Gagan. Beyond is the third stage of Daswan Dwar where is visible the moon.

 (8)

Beyond Trikuti, Sunn and Maha-sunn, is the throne with the umbrella of the Sovereign in the region of white resplendent light and incessant Anhad Shabd. It is to this Sovereign that I address my prayer.

 (9-10)

May I be the recipient of happiness here and hereafter. O Lord! Grant me abode in Thy Holy Feet.

 (11)
