Helpful Guidance For Satsangis Struggling With Meditation Practice, by Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram Bahadur of the Radhasoami Satsang

Helpful Guidance For Satsangis Struggling With Meditation Practice, by Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram Bahadur of the Radhasoami Satsang

Patience is necessary for making the mind and spirit ascend and the practices should be performed properly, i.e. without any obstruction.

1. It is desirable for the followers of the Radhasoami Faith that they should perform the practices regularly every day with birah [intense yearning] 1 and eagerness. They should concentrate the mind and the spirit and their attention for the first four or five minutes at the Third Til [Third Eye Center] 2 and then, directing their attention to the first or the second region of Brahmanda and concentrating it there, should listen to Shabda [Sound Current] and, at the time of Dhyan [meditation upon the form of the master, also inner Light], should concentrate their mind as well as their attention at the same place and meditate on the Form, whenever it may be visible. They should not exert much pressure in order to make the spirit ascend from lower planes upwards and should only pull their mind, thoughts and attention upwards easily and conveniently and fix them at the region with the help of Shabda or the Holy Form and should be careful that no worldly thoughts of any kind enter their mind and no impulses, whether pertaining to the world or paramartha [spirituality], enter their mind. If they do so, they would certainly get at least some joy of Shabda and the Holy Form.

2. If they do not have any feelings of birah and eagerness at the time of practices, it is desirable that they should carefully read two Shabdas [hymns] 3 containing admonition and feelings of detachment from the world, two Shabdas [hymns] containing feelings of love for the Lord and then sit for the practices and, reviewing their faults and defects, humbly pray in the Holy Feet of Merciful Radhasoami for His Grace and then begin to perform Bhajan or Dhyan.

3. If they are not able even then to bring the mind under control and useless thoughts and impulses continue to arise, they should take up the practice of Dhyan also simultaneously if they are then engaged in Bhajan, i.e. they should begin contemplating on the Holy Form while sitting in the posture for Bhajan [listening to the Sound Current], and at the same time keep their mind directed towards Shabda also. If even then thoughts and impulses do not stop, he should engage in the repetition of the Holy Name also. In this way, the mind would become still to some extent and would engage in the practices,

4. If even then thoughts and impulses continue to trouble and the mind does not properly engage in Bhajan, they should sing within themselves very slowly or inaudibly, at the time of Bhajan or Dhyan, a few verses of some Shabda [hymn] containing feelings of love. It is believed that by doing so impulses would stop and the devotee would get some joy from Bhajan and Dhyan.

5. If the mind remains indifferent and careless even after doing so and continues to indulge in useless thoughts, the devotee should give up Bhajan and Dhyan and continue the repetition of the Holy Name somewhat loudly. He would, in this way, get some purification and he should thereafter engage in Bhajan or Dhyan for some time or should engage in both the practices at the same time. He would then get some benefit.

6. If at any time the mind does not at all engage in these activities and remains indifferent and careless,one should read, with care and with his attention fixed on the meaning thereof, five Shabdas [hymns] giving the secret of the path as well as the details of the ascent upwards, slowly or inaudibly, and should try to concentrate the mind and attention consciously at all the stages mentioned therein and should repeat every verse of the Shabda four or five times or even more and should try to concentrate the mind all the time at the region mentioned in the verse. This kind of path (path) would give benefit more or less equal to that from Bhajan and Dhyan and one should be careful that no thought, whether worldly or paramarthi [spiritual], should be allowed to enter the mind.

7. If none of the above things can be done correctly, it should be understood that the mind is too much given to performing karmas and is dirty and the method of purifying it is that one should attend Satsang carefully for some time and engage himself in some service or the other of the lovers of the Lord and Sadhs and should also listen attentively to their discourses and the discourses of the Satsang and reflect on them. It is only then, that the mind would be purified in some time and love for paramartha would also be engendered. It is then that the practices referred to above would be performed properly.

8. And if one is unable to find an opportunity to live in the Satsang for some time and engage in seva and practices, he should close his eyes, wherever he may be sitting or whatever work he may be doing with his hands or even if he may be lying on the cot, for 6 to 7 minutes after every hour or two, and concentrate his mind and spirit and attention on the first stage and engage in Simran and Dhyan. The mind would not become fickle in such a short time, i.e. 6 or 7 minutes, nor would it engage in any thought and impulses. In this manner, if this practice is successfully performed even ten to twelve times during day and night, one would be able to spend about an hour or so in this undisturbed practice and the devotee would, after some days, certainly experience some joy and he would feel its effect all the time. And even at the time of Bhajan and Dhyan done ordinarily, the mind would become quiet for 6 to 7 minutes each time and get some joy and gradually even this ordinary practice would also be successfully performed. Besides, this practice for a few minutes each time should also be continued at other times so that purification of the mind and the senses may be achieved quickly and more and more joy may also be available.

9. If at any time during the practices of Bhajan and Dhyan one becomes forgetful of the world and is alert within, it is an indication that the practices are being done correctly, but if one finds himself in a condition resembling sleep, and he loses consciousness, both internally and externally, it is desirable that when this condition of forgetfulness begins to appear, he should give up the practice for a few minutes and open his eyes and if drowsiness continues, he should get up and walk a few paces and then sit again for practices and if again he feels sleepy, he should repeat the above-mentioned process and if he feels sleepy even then, he should give up the practice at that time.

10. One should engage in the practices at one time for at least half an hour or twenty minutes and he should remain engaged longer in the practice (be it Bhajan or Dhyan) in which his mind concentrates easily and give less time to the other but the two practices should be performed without fail twice daily and, as far as possible, one should not miss them.

11. Ordinarily, it is desirable to engage in the practices in the mornings and evenings and there are no restrictions, regarding bathing, washing etc. and regarding the place where one should do his Abhyasa [spiritual practice]. One may sit for the practices as one likes and may sit comfortably on a soft floor and if one feels the need to attend to a call of nature, he should first relieve himself. And as regards the place, he should take care that there should be no noise or disturbance where: he performs the practices and no stranger should be present there and nobody should disturb the devotee at the time of the practices. If there is any necessity, one may call the devotee from a distance.

12. A keen devotee may sit for his practices at any place and at anytime either before taking his food or two to three hours after taking his food and may perform the practices for any length of time from 10 minutes to an hour or an hour and a quarter or even for an hour and a half as long as his mind feels inclined at one time. And when, with the Lord’s Grace, his spirit and the mind concentrate and begin to ascend upwards, he should take care in the beginning that they are not pulled upwards too much or too high and should gradually make them ascend upwards, as he may be able to tolerate, and when, on account of the ascent to higher regions, the heart may begin to feel uneasy, he should continue the practice only to the extent it can be tolerated and when he cannot put up with this condition of the heart, he should give up the practice at that time or if the withdrawal is considerable and spontaneous and one cannot put up with it or feels some trouble or fear, even then he should give up the practice and get up and again engage in the practice after some time, so that gradually he may be able to endure that condition and he should also engage in some work after the practices so that his body and mind may not become inactive and lethargic.

13. If any part of the body of the devotee becomes benumbed, languid or useless at the time of Dhyan or Bhajan, he should understand that the practice has been correctly performed. He should not have, on observing this condition, any fear or misgivings. He should slowly get up after the practices and walk for a few minutes. Weariness and languor of the body would then disappear.

NOTES:

1. The idea in ‘birah’ is that the devotee feels an intense yearning to have the Darshan [vision] of the Lord or the Satguru or to meet Him and this yearning is accompanied by anguish and agony at its not being fulfilled or at delay in its being fulfilled. The hearts of true devotees are often filled with such feelings for the Satguru or the Supreme Being.

2. i.e. the Ajia Chakra or the 6th Chakra which is the seat of the spirit in the human body. P. P. III—22

3. The word ‘Shabda’ here means poem. The poems of Saints have been called ‘Shabdas’.

The Benefits of Being Mentored by a Living Teacher, Spiritual Master - Light and Sound on The Path

The Benefits of Being Mentored by a Living Teacher, Spiritual Master - Light and Sound on The Path

"We have so many scriptures, and since these scriptures describe the experiences of the soul which are beyond the human intellect, it is all the more necessary to seek the guidance of somebody who has undergone those experiments and experiences himself, and who can explain to us the true import of these scriptures. As these scriptures describe the realms and experiences which are beyond our intellect, our saints, seers, and prophets have often explained them in allegories, parables, and symbols. What often happens is that whatever is meant to be allegorical and symbolic we take to be literal; and whatever is to be taken as literal, we take to be symbolic. And it is in this respect that we cannot understand the true import of our scriptures. It is absolutely essential that for understanding our scriptures in their true import, we must go to the lotus feet of one who has traveled into the spiritual realms beyond, who has crossed the astral, the causal, and the supracausal plane, and who has achieved communion of the soul with the Creator. Only such a personality can explain to us the true import of these books. Spirituality is not a matter of mere knowledge; it is a matter of experience." - Darshan

We Can Receive Guidance and Insight In the Silence of Meditation - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

We Can Receive Guidance and Insight In the Silence of Meditation -- Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

Through silence meditation we can "step outside the box." Silence speaks volumes. The practice of receiving inner guidance or hearing the Voice or Life Impulse of God in the silence of contemplation is a universal teaching of all great saints and mystics. "Learn to sit still and be mentally still, and the silence thus generated with be more vocal than words spoken and written; and you will have an instantaneous solution not only to your own personal problems but to the problems of others as well." (Sant Kirpal Singh) "To be pure and still means to be open to purity and stillness -- as a result you can intuit the truth." (The Jesus Sutras) "If somehow this mind can become quiet by itself, attainment of true knowledge -- like diamond will become easily possible [everyone in this world is sad and restless because of lack of true knowledge. This true knowledge can be attained only when the mind becomes quiet]." (Kabir)

Anytime is a Good Time For Doing Our Meditation, but Particularly in the Morning When We Have Just Woken Up and Our Mind is Still.

Anytime is a Good Time For Doing Our Meditation, but Particularly in the Morning When We Have Just Woken Up and Our Mind is Still.

"The Masters have also praised this beautiful human body that has been given to us. This is the body in which we can transcend from humans to God. So, God Almighty has created this special body for us. God has created this body and has kept sixteen planes within this body. And then He has kept His entire Kingdom within it and He also resides within this body...

Meditation

"Our soul has descended from God Almighty and has come down these sixteen planes and has manifested within this physical body. And here it has got entangled with the mind and the senses. And in this entanglement, it has forgotten about itself, about its True Home. And, in the things that it is doing around itself, it has forgotten its True Home. And it is suffering here. Our thoughts are all-pervading, relating to these worldly things here and our relationships here. And our entanglement is because of these thoughts. When we do our Bhajan Simran, we are able to get out of this entanglement and go within. When we do our Simran, then we are able to concentrate our thoughts at the Eye Center. And then the mind, which is scattered in the thoughts all over the place, gets concentrated at the Eye Center and then we are able to go within. With the effort that we put in for doing this concentration with Simran, the mind settles down and we are able to get our thoughts together and come to the Eye Center. So, the soul then focuses its attention back where it is residing at the Eye Center and then the journey back to God Almighty starts.

"For doing this we should have a seamless love for our Master and God Almighty. It should not happen that we do our Simran Bhajan for a few days, then leave it for a few days, then again, do it for a few days. It should be without a break and it should be continuous.

"Anytime is a good time for doing Bhajan Simran, but particularly in the morning when we have just woken up and our mind is still. It is quiet. It is a good time to do our Bhajan Simran. As the day progresses our mind gets scattered in various thoughts, so Masters praise the early morning time."

-- Baba Ram Singh Ji, excerpted from a Meditation Talk, August 1st, 2017, Morning

NOTES:

Bhajan: Devotional practice of listening to the inner Sound Current;

Simran:  Repetition of names or thoughts; in Sant Mat, the simran of worldly thoughts is controlled through the Simran of the Five Charged Names, repeated by an initiate throughout the day and when sitting for meditation as a means of collecting the thought currents at the Third Eye Center; also used as a password of sorts to higher planes and protection from Negative Power influences;

Receiving Inner Guidance in the Silence of Meditation -- Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

Receiving Inner Guidance in the Silence of Meditation -- Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

Today, wisdom from the Masters or Mystics of the East and West on the power of silence to guide our every step, so each step brings us closer to our most noble goals, leading us into a life of love, peacefulness, an enlightened existence. The art of listening in the silence of meditation provides us with countless opportunities to see clearly without the usual day-to-day distractions, perceiving the events of our life from a higher vantage point. Silence allows angels to whisper advice into our ears. It also makes it possible for the authentic self to rise to the surface, introducing a new divine power or grace into this dimension of reality. It imparts insight, and ultimately, wisdom borne out of the depths or womb of contemplative silence gives birth to the realization of the soul itself. Most of the time we human beings are distracted surface-dwellers. We live from the levels of conscious mind and ego, with our attention hopelessly held captive by the turbulence and agitation of our day-to-day circumstances. If we can develop a daily meditation practice, learn to take a break and detach ourselves, allowing some space for the silence to speak to us, we will gain access to a higher wisdom. If we can pause and listen, taking time each day to meditate, this will provide opportunities for angels, the Inner Master-Power or the Great Invisible Spirit to communicate, to whisper into our inner ear.

Sant Mat Satsang Podcast: Finding Your Spiritual Path, a Community of Kindred Souls, and Guidance

Satsang Podcast: Finding Your Spiritual Path, a Community of Kindred Souls, and Guidance

Finding Your Spiritual Path, a Community of Kindred Souls, and Guidance  -- How A Formless Supreme Being Communicates With Souls Living in Realms of Time, Space, and Form -- An Introduction to Satsang, Sant Mat Satsang Podcast of Spiritual Awakening Radio

So many paths and religions, so little time. In the category of spiritual teachings and influences, the serious Sant Mat devotee must make the teachings of the Masters the top priority, the PRIMARY FOCUS. Otherwise, we just end up hopelessly distracted, pulled in various directions, not properly motivated to follow the guidance of the Masters or find success with our meditation. May we pay the most attention to the most advanced and wisest of voices, and leave the rest behind. Satsang! As Kabir says, "For we are influenced by the company we keep."

Honor Your Present Lifetime: "My dear daughter, I will repeatedly ask you to honor your present lifetime and try your best to raise yourself toward your own home. As soon as you reach the first stage of your journey, you will notice the wonderful spiritual scenes there, which will fill your heart with happiness and gratefulness to the Holy Father... Those who accept His teachings, and act upon them with love, gradually return to the purely spiritual Region under His guidance. Therefore, you need not be anxious, and you should continually perform the spiritual practices with firm faith and trust in the mercy of the Holy Father, Who has kindly disclosed to you the secrets of the True Holy Name; and you will certainly reach the goal one day." (Hazur Baba Sawan Singh)

Today, an Introduction to the Three Levels of Satsang: 1) Association with God, 2) Association with a Living Master, and, 3) Association with the Writings of Sages and Saints, and a review of Kirpal Singh's original Instructions for Holding Satsang.

Spiritual Guidance, Learning, Inspiration, Motivation, Support For Those on the Path of the Masters -- The Soul or Spirit Should also be Given Nourishment and Pleasure just as is Done in the Case of the Body and Mind -- What are the Influences You Let Into Your Life? Still Not Making Any Progress? Still Not Meditating? Still Not Following the Path?

"It appears proper for everyone, whether a man or a woman, that as they work day and night for providing nourishment and enjoyment to their body, mind and senses, they must also work a little for securing sustenance and nourishment to their spirit... If they will do so with sincerity, they would themselves feel its beneficial effects after practicing Abhyas [the meditation practice] for a short time, and would then realize within themselves the presence of the Supreme Being and of His grace... The spirit can get the highest form of nourishment, pleasure, strength and freshness, if it is raised upwards by the practices of Surat Shabd Yoga [Inner Light and Sound Meditation] and brought into contact or merged with the Current of nectar which comes from above." (Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram, Prem Patra Radhasoami)

"We cannot do or listen to Satsang once in a fortnight or once a month because our love and affection in the world outside is drawing us all the time. And if we want to get that love and affection towards our Master and towards God Almighty, then we have to bring it into our everyday life... That is why we should do our Bhajan Simran every day and we should listen to Satsang every day and fulfill the purpose of the life that has been given to us... So, therefore, we should listen to Satsang every day. And we should do our Bhajan Simran every day. And this is what we have been given this precious life for." (Baba Ram Singh Ji)

Worthiness of a Spiritual Seeker

Worthiness of a Spiritual Seeker

A serious seeker has to prepare a fertile ground within his or her inner Self. The prerogative of God-realization and attainment of the vision of the Divine only belongs to the atman (inner Self) or consciousness within the body. However, it is not possible to accomplish this while engrossed in the distractions of the mind and the body. It is only possible by being free of these distractions while living in the body. To be liberated from the sensory distractions is no easy task. However, it can be achieved with the grace of the Satguru (true teacher). For this, a practitioner must be determined, morally upright, and follow the instruction of the guru. Without these, it is impossible to obtain the grace of the guru. The practitioner can only diligently perform sadhana (literally, exertion to attain an objective, meditation, spiritual practice), but only the grace of the guru yields success in the endeavor. To attain the due rewards of sadhana [meditation practice] it is important to follow the gurus' instruction vigilantly and steadfastly. Resolve means: not wavering from the path in any situation...

To create resolve in seekers, the Sants give specific guidance:

First, keep a diligent meditation schedule as instructed by the guru.

Second, leave all desires except the yearning for seeing the Supreme Being.

Third, keep in mind the reverence of the guru.

Finally, observe instructions of the guru as the highest duty and consider the guru as the dearest of all.

Students who can follow the above instructions are qualified to follow the path.

For success in meditation it is important for a sadhak to be cautious in the following ways:

* Following the example of a crow: be repetitive (always at it, never giving up), always remaining vigilant and attentive in sadhana, and in following the guru's instructions.

* Have concentration similar to that of a crane: always be attentive at listening to the teaching of the guru;

* Nap or sleep similar to that of dog: be willing to follow the instructions of the teacher without laziness;

* Eat less: cultivate a sense of detachment from all physical pleasures and bodily desires;

* Finally, detachment: indifference to the 'ups and downs' of home and family relations.

It is important that a student should cultivate these qualities. Without the grace of the teacher, progress on the spiritual path and attainment of the Divine is not possible.

A seeker should pay attention to five factors:

1. Receive the teachings of the guru with great attentiveness.

2. After listening to the teaching, learn the esoteric techniques (diksha, initiation) from the guru for treading the spiritual path.

3. Make a diligent effort to succeed in the tests presented by the guru.

4. Joyfully endure the trials and obstacles on this arduous path.

5. Cultivate patience and perseverance.

Just as a traveler withstands the pains of the journey and calmly endures the delays of the train and discomforts of the railway station, in the same manner, the spiritual traveler on the Divine path, although not seeing the Divine for many years, does not waiver from the path. Rather, the seeker endures the delay, and keeping faith in the guru's words, enthusiastically waits for the moment of Divine realization.

Infinite knowledge is like an ocean with unlimited water. The ocean makes its water available to anyone who wishes to draw from it. However, the person who wants to draw water from the ocean is only limited by the capacity of his vessel for carrying the water. It is not the fault of the ocean if humans are limited in their capacity to draw water. Those who have bigger vessels have the capacity to carry the most water. In the same way, humans vary in their capacities to draw from the Divine Ocean of knowledge.

In the words of Sant Maharshi Mehi: "All the Sants are said to be impartial and are equally compassionate toward all beings and their grace showers like the rain, equally on everyone. Nevertheless, just as the flowing rainwater gathers only in the deep hollow places, the grace of Saints gathers in the hearts of those disciples whose hearts are emptied from worldly distractions and whose devotion is deep. They are ready to receive the grace of the guru. Furthermore, a devotee through service becomes eligible for the guru's grace and, not surprisingly, attracts the teacher's grace. Those who are careless and do not tend to the vessel of their hearts are able to hold only a little that the guru offers. Others, who are diligent in caring for the vessel, gain benefit by attracting the grace of the guru. In the teachings of Sants, this is the secret of serving the guru and following his teachings. Those who learn knowledge from the guru become humble and grateful and the devotion to the guru arises in their hearts naturally and effortlessly."

Amount of Time Required For the Inward Journey of the Soul -- Sar Updesh Radhasoami

Amount of Time Required For the Inward Journey of the Soul

Question: What amount of time will it take for a practitioner (abhyasi) of Inner Light and Sound Meditation (Surat Shabd Yoga) to secure access to the Higher Regions?

Answer: No time limit can be prescribed for it. One is said to have secured access to Higher Regions if one enjoys bliss internally and hears the Shabd (Inner Sound) clearly. But the attainment of this state depends upon the keenness of one's longing and yearning. It takes ten to twelve or fifteen years to acquire worldly learning and knowledge, and even then one does not gain mastery over the subject one studies. Fifteen to twenty years are taken in learning the ways of the world. In the same way, time will be required for giving up worldly habits and adopting pious and religious ones. But in spirituality (parmarth), if the love and renunciation of a practitioner (abhyasi) are keen and strong, and he (or she) devotes enough time to the daily meditation practice and satsang, and gives very little time to worldly matters or wranglings, then, in a short time, say, four or five years, one  will be able to achieve at least this much -- that they will have full faith in the greatness of Sant Mat [the teachings of the Masters] and will internally secure so much bliss and contentment that no doubt will be left in the mind about eventual true redemption. One will get bliss in daily meditation (abhyas) proportionately to the time devoted and the attention that one pays to it. One will continue this practice easily and lovingly, and will be able to curb the mind and senses to some extent. Then one will be able to know how much time will be required to have access to a certain region, and will gradually get the necessary strength to make endeavours for as much progress as one desires.
