Dadu Dayal’s Vision For Living A Spiritual Life

Dadu Dayal’s Vision For Living A Spiritual Life

A quote from the 16th century Indian Master Dadu, who outlined the Sant Mat vision of the spiritual life to be pursued during our time here on planet Earth:

Recognize the Path to your Beloved, O travelers and take the route of the anguished lover in separation. Keep the Master’s grace in your thoughts, and reflect upon his pure teachings. Develop love and devotion with endearment, and keep the thought of the Creator always before you. Try to merge yourself into God like water and water. Fix your mind within by following the Path of the Sound Current. A yearning will arise; make then an intense and anguished call. Repeat the Name of your Beloved, day and night, again and again. With care in thought, word and deed, you will cross to the other shore.

Hymn (Bhajan) of Sant Tulsi Sahib: Dil ka Hujra Saf Kar - Light and Sound on The Path: Sant Mat, Radhasoami

Hymn (Bhajan) of Sant Tulsi Sahib: Dil ka Hujra Saf Kar - Light and Sound on The Path: Sant Mat, Radhasoami

“The original copy of ‘Ghat Ramayana’ written by Saint Tulsi Saheb kept in a glass case in the ashram of Saint Tulsi Saheb in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh.”

(Photo Courtesy of Pujya Satya Prakash Baba [and Pravesh K. Singh])

Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras had some Sufi or Muslim disciples. Sometimes he composed hymns for them, the most well-known of these being a hymn addressing Sheikh Taqi. The one below seems to be in this category. It was published in Ajaib’s Grace magazine, May-June 2003.

Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, India:

Chorus:

Dil ka hujra (1) saf kar, jana ke ane ke liye,

Dhyan gairo ka utha uske bithane ke liye.

Translation:

Cleanse the chamber of your heart, so that the Beloved may enter,

Remove all the foreign impressions, so that He can take His seat there.

Verse:

Chashme dil se dekh yaha jo jo tamashe ho rahe,

Dilsita kya kya hai tere dil satane ke liye.

Translation:

See with the heart's eye the astonishing spectacle of this world,

Oh heart -- ravishing scenes appear there to entice you.

Ek dil lakho tamnna us pai aur zyada havis,

Phir thikana hai kaha uske tikane ke liye?

One heart, with many desires, and always the lust for more,

Where is there any place for the Lord to come and reside?

Nakali mandir masjido me jae sade aphosa hai,

Kudarati masjid ka sakin dukh uthone ke liye.

It is a great pity that, going in the false [imitation] temples and mosques,

The indweller of the true mosque [the human body] is made to suffer.

Kudarati kabe ki tu maharab me sun gaur se,

A rahi dhur se sada tere bulane ke liye.

We should listen with attention in the prayer niche of the true Kaaba, (2)

The Sound is coming from the Court of the Lord and is calling you.

Kyo bhatkata phir raha tu e talashe yar me,

Rasta shah rag me hai dilvar pai jane ke liye.

Why are you wandering around lost in search of the Beloved?

The way to reach the charming one lies through the shah rag (3)

Murshade kamil se mil sidak aur saburi se taki.

Jo tujhe dega faham shah rag ke pane ke liye.

O devotee, meet the Perfect Master with sincerity and patience.

He will give you the secret to find the shah rag.

Goshe batin ho kushada jo kare kuch din amal.

La ilaha allahu akbar pai jane ke liye.

If you do the practice for a few days, the inner way will open before you.

It is the path to reach Allah, the One God, the Most High.

Yah sada Tulsi ki hai amil amal kar dhyan de.

Kun kuran me hai likha allahu akbar ke liye.

This is the call of Tulsi: O practitioner, do the practice with concentration.

The kun [Shabd] described in the Koran, will take you to Allah, the Most High.

______

NOTES:

______

(1) A hujra is a small room for solitary meditation attached to a mosque.

(2) The Kaaba is the most holy place of Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca and the maharab or prayer niche indicates the direction facing the Kaaba in a mosque. The maharab or prayer niche of the true Kaaba is the third eye on the human forehead above and between the two eyes, alternatively called the Shiv netra or tisra til.

(3) The shah rag or "royal vein" is the central, subtle vein on the forehead that leads to Trikuti. It is also called sukhman nari.

This Invisible Spiritual Path We Follow - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

This Invisible Spiritual Path We Follow - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

"The Father's kingdom is already spread out over the earth, and people do not see it." (Gospel of Thomas) This saying is a lament really, about souls in a condition of spiritual poverty unable to recognize the spiritual reality already here and available. This is the Invisible Spiritual Path We Follow, having a spiritual practice, a form of meditation that pertains to seeing the Unseen Realms with another kind of sight. The heavenly regions are not visible to those limited only to the outer material world of the five senses. In order to have mystic-vision, we're going to need another kind of Eye to be able to gaze into those subtle realms beyond. "The Lord will make the pupil of your eye his home, and your eye will expand to contain the entire universe." (Sant Namdev)  "The eye through which I see God is the same eye through which God sees me; my eye and God's eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowing, one love." (Meister Eckhart, Rhineland Mystic) The third eye is the gateway which leads to realms above the purely physical world. It is situated behind and between the two eyes.

It is the birthright and evolutionary destiny of each and every soul to participate in the subtle divine worlds within, to become a child of both the outer creation, the cosmos, the universe we see all around us, AND to be a traveler of inner space, the kingdom of the heavens -- the Divine Ocean of Love -- accessed within through a very special kind of meditation of inner seeing and inner hearing. The Sufi mystic Ibn Arabi once wrote in his Bezels of Wisdom: "The Supreme Being brought the Cosmos into being as constituting an Unseen Realm AND a Sensory Realm, so that we might perceive the Inner through our Unseen [facilities] and the Outer through our sensory aspect." We are, in other words, meant to be children of both worlds.

"This new life of the Spirit begins from the day of Initiation into the Mysteries of the Spirit... The life of the spirit begins not with the theoretical exposition of the spiritual science but by a practical demonstration on the spiritual plane of the spirit-current made manifest. Here the invisible and inaudible life-stream is made both visible and audible to the Spirit within, converting the atheist into a theist in the true sense of the term. It is imparting the life-impulse and making It throb in every pore of the body. This coming back of the soul to the realization of her true nature and rising into Universal or Cosmic awareness beyond the walls of finitude is the true resurrection or coming to a new birth and a new life. To die in the body while living, is to live in the Spirit." (The Celestial Music, An Introduction to Kirpal Singh, by L. Gurney Parrott)

That last sentence, "To die in the body while living, is to live in the Spirit" is referring to the meditation practice that is followed by those initiated into Inner Light and Sound Meditation on this Path of the Masters.

"We should sit very lovingly in our meditation. We should focus at the Eye Center and do our Simran -- repeat the Simran in the mind. When we do this, the impurity of the mind, which has been cast on the mind by us for eons, for so many millions of lives... that gets washed off." (Baba Ram Singh)

Spiritual Wisdom From Rural India: Sant Mat Teachings of Santji, Baba Devi Sahab, and Maharshi Mehi - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

Spiritual Wisdom From Rural India: Sant Mat Teachings of Santji, Baba Devi Sahab, and Maharshi Mehi - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

Unaffected by the West, in rural India spiritual paths such as traditional Sant Mat continue to preserve and communicate the wisdom of the masters about living a spiritual way of life. At the heart of their spirituality is the meditation practice known as Inner Light and Sound Meditation (Surat Shabd Yoga). There are references to this form of meditation dating back to the time of the Upanishads and other ancient scriptures, also more recently with the various Sant movements populated by bhakti poet-mystics and spiritual masters such as Sant Namdev, Guru Kabir, Guru Nanak, Sant Ravidas, Sant Dharam Das, Sant Tukaram, Sant Dadu Dayal, Sant Dariya Sahib of Bihar, Goswami Tulsi Das, Sant Tulsi Sahib, Sant Radhaswani Sahib up to the living present. Today we explore the teachings of Santji, Baba Devi Sahab, and Maharshi Mehi Paramhans about successful meditation practice and the journey of the soul back to God.

"It is the highest duty of every individual to acquire experiential knowledge of this Sound and to investigate or explore the Origin or Source from where this Sound flows out." (Baba Devi Sahab)

Do attend Satsang every day,

Internal as well as external Satsang.

Listen and read spiritual literature for external Satsang,

Unbroken trance is the internal Satsang.

Practice meditation with your eyes closed,

Sitting motionlessly quite easily posed.

O traveler! If you wish to go alone on

the path of the Lord,

Look for the path within and do

not delay;

The four spheres of darkness, Light,

Sound and Soundlessness --

They all lie within the temple of your

body.

-- Padavali of Maharshi Mehi Paramhans

Santji: "We do not do enough Simran... If we do Simran all the time, the amount of Simran which we are supposed to do can be done very easily, and after that when we sit for meditation -- since before we sit we would have done our Simran at once our soul will withdraw from the body and we will start hearing the Sound Current by itself. But because we do not place enough emphasis on Simran, that is why when we sit for meditation all our time is spent in just collecting our thoughts, and because we lack in Simran that is why we hardly withdraw our soul from our body."

"Nowadays, what do people do? Whenever they have done a little bit of Simran during the day, and when their mind is a little bit quiet and still, then the Sound Current which they hear is very melodious and they like it, and sometimes they feel a little bit of withdrawal. Other times, when their mind is not quiet and they have not done enough Simran, then no doubt they hear the Sound Current, but still the Sound Current is not able to pull them up."

"If we have done a lot of Simran and if we have brought our soul to the Eye Center, then our soul gets on the Shabd or the Sound which is coming there, which we hear there, and we are able to reach our Real Home. If we hear the Sound Current after perfecting our Simran and after reaching the Eye Center, that Sound Current or that Shabd will definitely pull us up, and we will like that very much." Spiritual Gems (Letters) of Hazur Baba Sawan Singh - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

Spiritual Gems (Letters) of Hazur Baba Sawan Singh - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

The Importance of Spiritual Gems, Letters from Hazur Baba Sawan Singh Ji: Here we have letters from a successor of a successor of Sant Radhasoami (Radhaswami) Sahib, looking to the West and communicating with some of the very first initiates (satsangis) in the US and Canada. Spiritual Gems: "The Great Master wrote these letters in response to the questions and queries of his American and European disciples and seekers, so nearly all the questions and doubts that crop up in the minds of seekers after Truth and Reality have been amply dealt with in this volume, which makes it extremely valuable."

"I assure you that I do not mean to neglect any of our American Satsangis. I think I answered your last letter. It may have gone astray. But in any case, you should write to me every few months and give full account of your progress and ask any questions you may wish to ask. I shall be glad to hear of your inner progress on the Path. No doubt you are making some headway and I am anxious to see you go inside, truly, and find the Great Light and Joy which awaits you there." (Hazur Baba Sawan Singh)

"We are expecting much from America. The average person in America is much nearer to this Teaching than in any portion of Europe. The day will come when your people will turn to Sant Mat... Some day the Great Work there will assume much larger proportions. You may look confidently for it, in your own time. Be ready for it." (Hazur Baba Sawan Singh)

Other Key Points Made

Sant Mat in America is not a path only for the affluent that can afford to frequently travel long distances. Avenues for learning, satsang, and pathways for initiation for those who qualify must always be available. Nobody left behind.

The language barrier issue: There must always be new satsang material being translated and published in English.

There are not two Sant Mat paths: a Sant Mat "lite" for new age Americans or westerners, and the traditional full Sant Mat for Indians, but the complete Sant Mat for all.

This includes adhering to the vegetarian diet: "I never gave permission to anyone to eat meat in my life. A mother does not administer poison to her own children. In R.S. Faith animal food cannot be allowed under any conditions. It hardens the heart, and makes the soul dull and heavy." (Spiritual Gems, Sawan Singh)

Guidance For Living A Spiritual Life On Earth According to Kabir - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcasts

Guidance For Living A Spiritual Life On Earth According to Kabir

The Kabir Satsang Book of Prayers (Sandhya Path, The Path of Realization) contains some wonderful prayers but also many insightful verses offering guidance about living a spiritual way of life on earth in this human form.

It's actually one of my all-time favorite books from the Sant tradition of India. The Kabir Book of Prayers is another spiritual classic from the same Sant Dharam Das Kabir community that gave us the Anurag Sagar (Ocean of Love) and the other volumes of the Kabir Sagar (Ocean of Kabir). As you may know from my articles and podcasts on the Origins of Sant Mat, the Five Names, and the Identity of Sant Tulsi Sahib's Guru, I trace the contemporary Sant Mat guru lineages back to Sant Dariya Sahib of Bihar and from there back to spiritual masters associated with the Sant Dharam Das Kabir community. While not as organized into a single volume such as the Adi Granth or Sikh Scriptures, there are indeed many volumes of writings associated with this line of masters that go back to Sant Dharam Das and his successors. Over time, you'll hear many of them quoted on this podcast, as I endeavor to especially be mindful of all the great poetry and prose, the banis and bhajans in the Sant Mat lineage of this Path of the Masters spanning many generations.

Today I also share from the book, Doctor by Chance, Mystic by Choice, Memoir of a Doctor’s Journey from Medicine to Spirituality, by Dr. Jagessar Das, on the vegetarian vegan ethics of Kabir.

"He [the Supreme Being] is from the beginning, eternal, in age after age, and Nameless [Anadi, Anami]. As a saint he left his own abode to come into the world. He came into the world and taught the way, and released the souls from Yama (death)."

"The birds, separated at night, meet again in the morning... I am Kabir, and I do not break my promise. My Word has power and is dependable. Whoever climbs onto the chariot of the Word, I will take to the Eternal Abode."

"Give up hopes on others, but have hope on God. Keep the company of holy people, and let truth saturate your entire being. Give up passions and desires, and drink the nectar of God’s name."

"The soul finds drops of nectar flowing. It longs to see God and, on being in His presence, it bathes in the river of tranquility."

Living A Spiritual Way of Life According to the Kabir Book of Prayers

Living A Spiritual Way of Life According to the Kabir Book of Prayers

Love bestirs the heart of the separated lover for God, and God responds by enlightening him. He then realizes that the soul and God are one.

Whoever seeks, finds that God is known through His Name. When that form of God (Name) is in the heart, no other hunger remains.

Meditation on God rewards you with bliss and a tranquil mind. See yourself in all beings, and in all beings see only God.

See God in all beings. As one essence He is present in all forms.

Always avoid quarrel as it produces evil consequences. It creates suffering, consumes you with worries, and destroys your home.

Speak sweetly with everyone and happiness will spring up all around. It is the charm that wins the hearts of others. Give up harsh words.

The welfare of others is your greatest duty, the highest of all virtues. Have mercy for all beings, even as taught in the vedas and puranas.

Know him to be patient and wise who understands, and is not disturbed by people's ways. Their evil ways do not affect him.

Always be strong and steadfast in your dharma. If you sincerely follow your dharma, your life will be easily and pleasantly rewarding.

Always take part in satsangs and remove all worldly obstacles. You may not have this opportunity again, as human birth is difficult to obtain.

Simran! Excerpted from a Satsang Discourse Titled, "You Should Have One Wish — One Aspiration — And That Aspiration Should Be To Pursue Naam", by Baba Ram Singh

Simran! Excerpted from a Satsang Discourse Titled, "You Should Have One Wish — One Aspiration — And That Aspiration Should Be To Pursue Naam", by Baba Ram Singh

Kabir Sahib says, "In that happiness, or in that contentment, if we are forgetting Simran and we are forgetting God Almighty, then let stones and boulders fall on such happiness and such contentment."

That poverty is much better where, in that poverty, we are able to remember God Almighty and we are able to do Simran of God Almighty.

Kabir satguru naam se,

Koti bigan tar jaay,

Kabir satguru naam se,

Koti bigan tar jaay,

Raayi samaan basandara,

Ketha kaat jaraay.

Kabir Sahib says, "The Naam that has been given to us is of very high value. And if we do that Simran for one hour every day and we are connected with Naam, then a lot of impediments, a lot of difficult, that we are likely to face because of our karmas are automatically absorbed by the Grace of the Master — and that helps us."

By doing Simran, we are able to reduce the burden of karmas and, as a result, at the time of our death, when we are leaving this body, we do not have to suffer so much.

If we are not doing our Simran and we're not redeeming those deeds, then those deeds collect and, as a result, ultimately, we have to redeem those deeds by means of a sickness or an ailment, or by means of some sadness or some loss. So, such things, such events, then happen as a result of the build up of such karmas.

The Simran that has been given to us is of a very high order. And where we do Simran, even the place gets purified. At that place, there are no bad influences. No mystical powers also work on you. Neither do the angels of death come and disturb you. Neither does Kal come. And neither does Maha Kal come. Only the Master comes at the time of death of that satsangi.

So, even if we are connected a little with Naam — with Simran — then the Masters shower Their Grace. They are Dayal and They are very gracious and They come at the time of death to take us.

Therefore, we should try to do Simran regularly. And, by that, we are able to gradually reduce the burden of karmas and, at the time of death also, it becomes easier for the Master to take us.

Lene ko satnaam hai,

Dene ko an daan,

Lene ko satnaam hai,

Dene ko an daan,

Tharane ko adheenatha,

Bhudan ko abhimaan.

Kabir Sahib says, "If you have to take something, then take Sat Naam. And, if you have to give something, then you can donate food to someone. Because, by doing so, you will be able to help yourself and you will get the satisfaction of that selfless donation that you are doing."

Kabir Sahib says, “The Naam helps you steer through this ocean of life and death. It helps you steer through this life and takes you back to God Almighty. And if you want to stay afloat here, you have to be generous and you have to be selfless. So, that will keep you afloat. And if you want to drown in this ocean of life and death, then it will be because of your ego."

So, if you have ego, that will be the cause of your drowning. And if you are selfless and you are generous, that will be the cause for you to stay afloat.

Excerpts from Letters to Initiates by Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram

Excerpts from Letters to Initiates by Huzur Maharaj

Go on regularly with your [meditation] practice, keeping your mind and senses undisturbed as far as possible; and trust in the mercy of the Supreme Father to grant you strength gradually as you advance. You will progress inward daily.

Merciful Radhasoami [The Lord of the Soul] was also pleased to declare that whenever anybody is initiated into the Surat Shabd Marga, his contact is immediately established with Sat Purusha Radhasoami. Hence, Sat Purusha Merciful Radhasoami would continue to shower his grace on everyone who would sincerely perform the practices to some extent with feelings of love and would not indulge in the evil tendencies of his mind as far as possible, i.e. He would gradually make the mind and the spirit of such a devotee ascend higher and higher internally and would protect him from the obstacles put by Maya and Kal.

The morning time will be the best for you to practice Bhajan [meditation upon the Sound Current].

Go on with your practice as much as you can and the Supreme Father, through His mercy, will gradually help you in the purification of the mind; and the devotional practice will then become easy and pleasant; but this cannot be accomplished soon and therefore patience and trust should be adhered to.

If you remember the Supreme Father by practising devotion and by sometimes repeating the Holy Name you will find that Grace won't forsake you, but on the other hand will always extend its protection to you in all matters.

The Supreme Being Radhasoami is our true guide. He is always with us, within us, sees us doing every little bit of internal and external work and helps us in everything good.

Faith, worth the name, must be living. It must consist in acquiring an affection, or rather an intense love, for the Supreme Being and an intense desire to approach Him; and this latter we can do in the interior of the body, for the path is within us.

Everything depends upon the purity of heart, or in other words, upon the degree of affection each one has for Supreme Father and the extent to which he has cleared his mind of all other affections, or to be more clear, the extent to which one has waived away other or worldly affections and given preference to the most holy love of the Supreme Father.

You are quite right in saying that true and sincere love and Bhakti [devotion] are what is required of a practitioner like yourself. It is a stupendous idea and only idea by which true redemption can be effected, but it cannot be the work of a day or a month or a year. For a very long time, i. e, for ages and ages, the mind has, in a manner, become the slave of the senses. Unless the direction of the mind or rather the downward currents emanating from the mind, be taken upward through the mercy and grace of the Sant Sat Guru Radhasoami, it would not be possible to create Bhakti or assimilate Surat with Shabd [the soul's attention being absorbed with the Sound Current]. You need not be disappointed and you should not lose heart and further, you should bear in mind that when you have been initiated in the Sublime Faith and when you have gone within at the third eye center, be rest assured that you are under the protection of the Supreme Father.

-- Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram

From the Prem Bani Radhasoami of Huzur Maharaj

Receive initiation from the Guru in the true secrets of Shabd.

Practise the modes of Surat Shabd Yoga with love and affection.

Regularly practice Surat Shabd Yoga. Contemplate the Guru's form.
Behold beautiful scenes and spectacles within.

When Radhaswami Dayal [the Merciful Lord of the Soul] is pleased to shower His grace, He will elevate your soul along the Current of Shabd. You will then ascend to your True Home.

Listen to the reverberations of Anhad Shabd within you.

Radhasoami in His grace and mercy will take you across.

Make His holy feet your prop and support.

My Beloved Himself is the most munificent Radhaswami.
I sacrifice myself at His holy feet.

Radhasoami, in His grace, has taken me in His arms.
He has extricated me from Kal's net.

Imparting to me the knowledge of Shabd,
He has elevated my Surat to higher regions.

I heard the sounds of the Bell and the Conch.

I saw the Red Sun and then beheld the Moon.
I heard the melodious sounds of the Flute and the Harp.
I was delighted to touch the Holy Feet of Radhasoami.
I have now reached the Highest Abode.

Always utter 'RADHASOAMI',
the Name of the Merciful Supreme Being.
Then only will mind and Kal become powerless against you.

Radhaswami is my most Beloved Lord.
None other than Him comes to mind.

I sing praises of Radhasoami again and again
and shall remain at His holy feet ever alert and vigilant.

I discard all the evil tendencies of the mind
and enshrine RADHASOAMI Naam in my heart.

I sing 'RADHASOAMI', 'RADHASOAMI',......every moment.

Perfection Can Only Be Found Within

If man takes inspiration from the lives of Saints and knowers of essence and introduces their teachings in his daily life, a phenomenal change will take place in him. He will feel that it is futile to search for perfection in the outer world. Supreme Wisdom, Supreme Bliss will appear within him and the Creator of the Universe will be with Him, yet he will live like an ordinary man. He will be in communion with the Celestial Sound. He will distribute the fruits of his knowledge to all, regardless of caste and creed. You must practice repetition of the Holy Name 'Radhasoami' which is the creator and Sustainer of the Universe. When this Name appears within you, the Knowledge of Death and life after Death will be attained by you. The benefits of this higher Knowledge will be immeasurable but there will be no outer manifestation of this. This was the lifestyle of all Saints. This will hold true for all times as long as humanity lasts. Instead of looking for 'the best of man' in the outer world, you must practice the spiritual exercises prescribed by the Radhasoami Faith with the aid of the Living Spiritual Master and you will attain perfection within.
